245 vs 265 fronts

Is the any benefit to a wider front tire? comparing the 245 stock size and the recommended 265 by a lot of people?

only thing i can think of is better grip but wider/heavier front tires = under steer?

can anyone shed some light on this? :tiphat:

I am running a 255/305 setup right now. I will probably be going 265 on my next set of fronts though. Would love to hear from someone who has ran both.

i'm running 265/285 RE-11's right now. i'd probably go 285 up front with a square setup. 245 is too small. not enough grip.

likewise, i just ordered a set of 245, now i am not sure i should change it to 265 instead. Anything wrong with the 255? i know your car has the power to support wider tires for sure

i dont know if i will ever go that high on the front, but 265 would be my max as a DD

You will obviously add a little more weight but it will look better and corner a little better I bet IMO. Are you running 285s in the rear?

m4a1mustang 12-10-2013 07:23 PM

The Z is lacking front grip big time. 265 is fine (I have a set of 265/285 front/rear waiting for spring) and will not increase understeer... in fact, it will help to decrease it.

Hotrodz 12-10-2013 07:52 PM

I went with 265 front and 305 rears....there is more grip which makes it seem like there is less under steer. I know there are some running 275 up front, but that seems a little extreme. I was contemplating going smaller in the back to square it up a little more, but I think being turbo charged, moe back tire, moe better!!! Also that combo looks sweet on the car.

You will definitely want those 305s in the rear!

I'm running 275/305!

Grindkiezer 12-10-2013 11:55 PM

275/305
Go big or go home!

The smaller the difference between your front and rear tire widths, the less your car will understeer.

TerribleONE 12-11-2013 01:39 AM

You guys running 275s, how much camber? Do you rub?

Almost none and none, dropped on H&R springs and still have a little more room to go.

I'm assuming 275/35 or 275/30s?

I'm on 245/40s and rub on big bumps. dropped on H&Rs.

275/35 also dropped, but am still going to go a few mms lower ;]

MacLean 12-11-2013 04:23 PM

I would go 265/35 up front & 305/30 or 315/30 in the rear.

That wouldn't be very proportional with 315 in the rear. In my opinion 305 is the biggest that should go on the rear wheels anything else starts to look a little much. but 265 and 305 together wouldn't be too bad

When I replace my tires I'm going to go with 265/35 in the front and 305/30 in the rear. I believe there are some people here that are running 335 in the rear, but far from few are doing so.

Tombonombona 12-11-2013 08:31 PM

275/315 on stock camber and suspension with aftermarket wheels.. Little bit of rub when I hit a good bump.

Joepro 12-11-2013 08:44 PM

I had 265/295 in PSS I returned them for OE sizes after 1k miles, and still was pissed, just watch if you are on stock wheels and which tire you choose, the "god" PSS have stupid soft sidewalls and turned the Z into a jalopy from sidewall flex. Stiffer tires will be ok, I and running BFG SC-2 in the rear now, they are not as sticky as the PSS but the sidewalls are way stiffer, I would feel OK with 265s in the front with the BFG, which I currently still have the PSS in the front, which I will throw away in the spring unless someone local wants them, that's how much I despise that tire.(yes I know BFG is owned my MIC) Next set after the BFGs hands down will be RE-11s with 265/f 285/r. Unless its for looks wider is only need for more power in the rear, I still want to have a little fun, don't completely lock down the rear :)

m4a1mustang 12-11-2013 08:57 PM

I have 265/285 S-04s waiting for spring.

Joe, sorry about your PSS experience. I enjoyed them on my Mustang. Never had them on the Z. I hear the S-04 is a lot stiffer so I'm interested in seeing how they behave.

I love my PSS's on my Z.

Joepro 12-11-2013 09:05 PM

I had the s-04s I like them, and though I was stepping up with the PSS...I would do the s-04 again over the re50 or pss, no hesitation. Bridgestones usually has stiffer sidewalls.

Interesting.

Joepro 12-11-2013 09:15 PM

I don't want to stray too far from the OP question but here is a crappy video that helps display my thoughts, it was quick and dirty, but I think it gets the point across, you can hear me grunting when I was pushing down on the bfg to flex the sidewall. I know this is not scientific, but I have mounted enough tires in my day to know the difference in sidewalls(that's what he said...sorry had to). Pardon my 2 cents and out shop music, that side of the shop is country the other is classic rock, its a constant battle...radio wars everyday...sigh.

So looks like my next tires will be 265s/285s on stock sport wheels? Car is driven daily

I'm thinking of going w/ these same sizes…I've got 20mm spacers all around and dropped 1" on Swift springs…any potential issue at these sizes?
Would they stick out too much? Rub?

265/40?…35? & 285/35?…30?

Hotrodz 12-16-2013 09:21 PM

I'm lowered on Teins and they drop a little more than Swifts with no issues of rubbing. I have 15mm spacers all around and the rears are pretty much even and the fronts are just within. I think you will be fine 285 rear and 265 front.

Limeybastard 05-06-2014 10:40 AM

Has anyone gone 235 up front? I used to always use narrower tires up front on a performance rwd car back in the past. Example my euro spec e36 bmw 3 stock was 225/45 front and 245/40 rear. 205 and 215 front would eliminate tramlining and made for a better turns.

kenchan 05-06-2014 10:52 AM

i think you'd probably run 275 up front for better turnability on tight tracks.

That's going the wrong way. The car needs more front grip, not less. Unless you want to add more understeer for some strange reason.

I bought a used set of 18" stock wheels that came with 225/245 tires. I bought the wheels to use for autocross and ran these tires in my first event. Could always have used more grip, but they did fine, and since this is my first season I'm going to use up these tires before I buy more.
