WRONG APPLICATION - Nissan 370Z Wheel Locks
WARNING: The wheel locks being sold by Nissan for the 370Z are NOT the correct wheel locks. I had these locks on my 370Z Rays and after one month of driving with them the locks began to show signs of stress fractures around the locking pattern. One wheel lock completely sheared off from the pattern to a 1/4 inch down the lock shaft itself.
I took it over to the Nissan dealer and they indicated the locks that are required are shank-style and the ones being sold by Nissan as the wheel locks for a 370Z are not shanks and they need to be......and they also pointed out the shaft tip should NOT have the beveled tip but should instead be straight shaft shanks. In fact they showed me that these "Nissan 370Z wheel locks" don't even screw on far enough to make contact with the wheel to create locking pressure on the wheel. They stated the wheel locks are in plain words the wrong wheel locks to use on the 19" Sport Rays application. They told me that I have been driving around for a month in essence with just 4 lug nut on and that any cornering in the past month I was doing was putting severe stress on the "Nissan 370Z wheel locks" which was what was causing the wheel locks to fracture and shear. They indicated the correct wheel lock for the 370Z Rays is the McGard #21153 wheel locks as these are the correct shank length and shape in that they are straight shafts. Fortunately no damage was done to the Rays while driving for the past month with the wrong wheel locks being sold by Nissan . |
Been discussed before. Unfortunately many dealers have done this (including mine) thinking the old locks they used on 350's would be the same. I believe there was a bulletin to parts correcting the mis-information..

I bought some from one of the sponsors here. The kit is actually for a 2007 G35 sedan. Are these also incorrect? I do not have a lug nut wrench at the moment to take them off.

But I'll give you the Cliff Notes real quick. When the 370Z was first released, they did not have wheel locks. Dealers started just throwing on the standard wheel locks that fit all Nissans, not realizing that the Z's wheels were different. This picture here shows one of the lug nuts from a 19" Rays Sport wheel on the left, and one of the 'standard' Nissan locks that the dealers were putting on: http://www.the370z.com/members/chris...ocking-nut.jpg This was a colossal fail on the part of the dealers, and these standard locks started fracturing, as shown on the far right of the above pic. Since then, they have finally gotten with the program and now have locks that are correct for our wheels. This is what they look like: http://img294.imageshack.us/img294/9338/img0236.jpg These are the ones you want. Notice that they're exactly the same dimensions as the stock lug nuts. So your blanket statement that "The wheel locks being sold by Nissan for the 370Z are NOT the correct wheel locks" isn't quite accurate. It depends on which locks your dealership is selling. If a dealership is selling the 'standard' Nissan locks for the 370Z, then yes, those are the wrong ones and they need to come off asap. But if they're selling the ones pictured above, those absolutely are the correct ones and there's nothing wrong with them. The McGard 21153s I put on my car are also compatible, but understand that I put them on my car as an interim measure. In other words, I ordered them before Nissan caught up and released the correct locks. Now that the correct ones are out, there's really no reason to go with the 21153s. Btw, just as a side note, the Nissan locks are also McGards (i.e., McGard makes them). In fact, I have since swapped out the 21153s for the 'correct' locks from Nissan. Hope that clears things up. :tiphat: |
This explains a lot - a few weeks back my TPMS came on, and as I have Nitrogen in the tires, I went back to the dealer for my free top up. Turned out I had 2 nails in my rear tire. Anyway long story short, they replaced the tire (luckily I took the tire warranty option). They then told me they had split the wheel lock putting it back on and would have to replace them too - just checked and they used the correct part #

Thanks for posting that Dad! According to that bulletin the parts that I ordered are in fact the correct appilcation. Apparently the G35 had similar lug nuts as the 370. |

Another option I found from Gorilla which is closer to the OEM design for the Ray's wheels are the 73621T
I am hoping they are less noticeable than the Nissan locks, which look just a little out of place next to the rest of the lug nuts. |
You can get nissan proper flanged wheel locks for the 370z from peoria nissan in peoria arizona, mail order from their parts department for $36.80 plus shipping a set.
Your 2012 Z should already come with wheel locks |
Bottom line is, if a theif really wants your rims they'll take em. I've seen all different locks broken and rims stolen.
|
Any one know where I can get black lug nuts and locks that work for the sport wheels?

Looking for a little help if anyone has time, love to read a thread to get help and it has multiple part numbers everyone agrees upon
I have a 350z and recently bought 370z sport wheels, i went to the dealership to get some locking nuts (my sport wheels only came with 15 lug nuts) so we got some ordered up and they ended up being the ones in the first post without the washer style The dealership swears by them, this is 2012 and they still swear by it, they told me if i wanted to use the 370z nuts i needed 370z studs, not sure if there is a length difference on these two but i can get 13 complete turns with the nut on the stud They also recommended for me to get open ended lugs So we got these Nissan part numbers 999W2-Z3409 (pulled from courtesy parts) Nissan Flat Washer Style Wheel Lock - Z34 370Z :: Nissan Parts, NISMO and Nissan Accessories - Courtesyparts.com 999W2-JT000 (pulled from service bulletin) http://www.the370z.com/images/servic.../NTB09-024.pdf Any help? 350z vs 370z stud length? 13 turns good? (just hoping it sits all the way in the wheel) Part number match? I wouldnt mind ordering Gorilla ones or some open ended lugs Thank you! |
So glad I bothered to read this thread. Even in 2011 my dealer managed to screw this up and use the wrong locks. Luckily I had already taken the locks off and used the standard lugs. Just went to the dealer this morning to get the right ones (for free). They argued with me initially but once I gave them the TSB number and they looked it up they gladly exchanged the locks that came with the car for the right ones. They even thanked me for pointing this out to them.

Just bought a set of wheel locks from my Nissan Dealer and the part number is 999W2-JT000 They fit perfectly, and torqued to spec. The shank does not reach the bottom, the flat washer hits first. The lock is on the left, the regular nut is on the right.
|
Ok, on the lock is on the bottom, since it rotated the picture.
|
Can anyone explain the difference between the 999W2-JT000 and the 999W2-Z3409?

Wheel Locks
So I just took my car in for maintenance, I told them about the wheels locks and they let me know that the incorrect ones are correct. They told me they would check but the dude said he was sure those were correct.
Can someone give me the correct Item number or anything that I can give him so he can look for it in the parts department? |
Nevermind
Nevermind guys/gals the technician was very cool and ordered me the correct ones for free. He said that they made a mistake with some of the 370zs.

Hey I have a quick question. I know this is a kind of an old thread but I got my hands on a set of nismo rays yesterday and noticed the different style lugs compared to the base wheels. Are there any after market companies (Rays, Nismo) that have this style lug?
|
Does anyone know if the 2013 Rays 19" Rims use the same locks as the 2012 (and earlier) version?
I was looking into the McGard locks and am trying to figure out which ones to use. |
no need. noone will take the '13 wheels. :icon17: jk

FWIW, I had the same problem after I picked up my new '13. Dealer blamed it on the dealer that he got the car from. I suppose the "Pre-delivery inspection" consists of making sure that the dealer's plastic license tag advertising is installed, and nothing else.
|
They were the same. I was under the impression they were different. Spoke too soon. All good. Thanks!
