My 2013 sport package wheels are... peeling??

I just got my 2013 370z like 2 weeks ago and am loving it. However, a couple of days ago, I noticed something strange on my wheels. Upon closer inspection, I saw that they were PEELING?? wtf?? I thought the gunmetal color was the ACTUAL color of the sport package wheels, but it seems like it is just a film covering the rays? Can anyone chime in on this?

I'm going into the dealership asap about this. I'm very irritated about this and it's very lame that Nissan did this...

Boost_lee 09-22-2012 03:46 AM

keep us informed...this isn't good news. Hopefully its not a major flaw on all '13 sport wheels

Any chance that is a protective coating for shipping? On cars.com there are 2 370z 13 Sports - 1 with a brighter finish on the wheel and then 1 with a darker finish. Im betting thats the difference. I hope its not actually a flaw. Im about to put an order for a Blue 13 Sport and will delay if there is a major flaw with these wheels.

hmmmmm, I'm not sure. But if it were, wouldn't the dealer remove it before the car was sold? I thought the wheels were a gunmetal color :( but I guess it's not. Nissan fooled me.

I called the dealer earlier about it and they said they had no idea and just to bring the car in. I found a couple of minor peels on the other wheels too... So right now, I have 3 wheels with peels and 1 wheel that looks awesome.

2 wheels I spoke of. One seems brighter

From the picture it looks like protective film. There is often quite a bit on a new car.

Our used 2010 still had film on the aluminum dead pedal for example when we got it in 2012...no one noticed it. Well...*I* noticed it. It had a red hue...so don't know how others missed it :)

If the film is subtle and well adhered, its easy to miss. Some dealers are far dumber then they appear to be.

I only want to say its protective covering because the rims should be silver, and your rims look like they are a few colors, not uniform at all...

Sorry about the wheels, but welcome to the group and good luck!!!

(Come visit us at a meet soon)

Yep your average PDI guy at the dealer isn't Einstein. I can still see remnants of it on my 2010 sport rays on the edge! Im betting they FORGOT to pull it off. OP check the rest of the car for other items they missed.

MC 09-22-2012 07:12 AM

its protective film.. the wheels probably come completely covered off the boat and when they pulled it off some of it got stuck... just pull the rest of it off

see look how the GTRs come

Z_ealot 09-22-2012 07:13 AM

OP thats the protective wrapping they put the wheels in from the factory that is peeling off, i know cause when i received my 2011 i had to peel the rest of that stuff off as the dealer missed a few pieces of it on my rims.

scottIN 09-22-2012 08:22 AM

Is it clear or silver? If it's clear, it's the protective wrap. If it's silver, you've got problems.

Si...man up, pull one off. How can you not? Its just taunting you..pull me, pull me it says. Why waste fuel and time to dealer. :driving:

bigsix 09-22-2012 10:37 AM

yeah, looks like dark film starting to peel off

kfull 09-22-2012 12:51 PM

I agree that it looks like a film. It's just weird that it's the exact color of your wheels. It's probably fine just to peel off on your own but I'd still have the dealer look at it and have them take it off in case it causes any damage or discoloration.

Ken'z370 09-22-2012 02:17 PM

Yeah, it's definitely NOT a protective cover. My rear driver side wheel looks IMMACULATE. I have minor peels on the other wheels as well. If it were a protective cover, of course I would've just peeled it off..

I honestly think its a film to make the wheels "gunmetal".....

Take A bit more off on one wheel then a)post a pic b)go to the dealershit

coltrain 09-22-2012 02:24 PM

Yeah, those 2013 wheels are suposed to be gun metal. I can't believe Nissan just put a thin "film" over the silver wheels though. Lame...

It seems like there's other small bubbles or something on the wheels. I would like to know how the dealership handles this...

Haboob 09-22-2012 04:29 PM

In all honesty, I think this makes me happier, as I like the silver finish better.

The gunmetal had grown on me, but if I can peel it off... oh my! :excited::excited:

But yeah, I'd take it to the stealership and see what they have to say about it.

Ken'z370 09-22-2012 04:53 PM

I'll have some time to go to the dealership this coming week. I'll let you guys know how it turns out. I'm hella disappointed in Nissan trying to make the wheels something that they're not by putting some flimsy film on it.

LakeShow 09-22-2012 11:53 PM

What I was told if that those wheel protectors and the curb guard film are not removed after delivery they can burn onto the rims from the heat.

So those are curb guard wheel protectors? Did the dealer remove yours? So I'm assuming your wheels have a silver finish now instead of gun metal?

No the film like on those wheels of the GTR previously posted is what I'm talking about. If the dealer left a little section of film on your rim it could have burned onto the rim. I'm not saying that is what your issue is but could be a possibility. From your picture the damage looks very odd, never seen anything like it before.

Can you check your 2013 when you can? Are your wheels a silver finish or gunmetal? If it's gunmetal, I would check around on each wheel for any minor peels. Like I posted before, my rear driver side wheel is in immaculate condition (with no peels at all). It is an awesome gunmetal color finish. The other 3 wheels have peels (like I posted in my pictures) which leads me to believe the wheels are actually silver but made to seem gunmetal with a "film".

NewlyIMPORTed 09-23-2012 02:07 AM

Im with the others.. Just pick one and peel the s*#t off and see what happens. If it is not a protective cover you will still get new wheels for it being that easy to take off.

DLSTR 09-25-2012 03:58 PM

OP any news???

I ended up getting really annoyed with it and peeled it off like all the others on here wanted me to do LOL... false alarm! Turns out it really WAS just LEFTOVER protective film that protects the wheels. The freaking employees at the dealership should've done a better job with removing that stuff! Hella freaked me out! But thanks for the feedback, everyone! hahah :bowrofl:

So they're more of a silver color than gunmetal? The ones at the dealership I saw were a gunmetal, but probably have that film on there too. Hmm... def. will be peeling it off when I get it.

We've been falling in love with the wrong color!

coltrain 09-26-2012 10:30 AM

Please tell me they're still gunmetal!

UruZai 09-26-2012 05:21 PM

I better check the rims when my 2013 arrives, thanks for the heads up!

Ken'z370 09-26-2012 05:59 PM

Yes, they're GUNMETAL!! it was just leftover protective film. They didn't remove the protective cover carefully and left some excess pieces on some of the wheels. Don't worry, wheels are still sexy hahah

cheshirecat 09-27-2012 08:28 AM

durr

Keepflying 05-13-2013 11:10 AM

Thanks for the info guys. I have a 2012 370Z, and two of the wheels have some flaking, and two look perfect. Is it the protective coating that is flaking off, or are the rims defective?
Should I have the dealership replace them all?

chrischhorn 05-13-2013 01:35 PM

Flaking? like white residue? Depends on how often you are near the beach/ocean since I see you're in CA. corrosion could be your problem. Pics would hell much more. Here in Hawaii, EVERYTHING is corroded unless you wash your car constantly.

Wow, this was all suspenseful and its just the protective coating!!

This is why i had the dealer NOT touch my car and i took everything off the day of delivery myself...
