What size tires for 18" Base Wheels? (tracking)

So I have a set of the 18" base wheels that I want to put tires on for tracking. I'm going to get RE-11's, but I'm not sure what sizes I should run. I'm running 15/20 spacers, not sure if that will matter or not.

Also, should I go for a square setup or would it be better to go with a wider tire in the back?

m4a1mustang 03-16-2011 11:05 AM

Square setup is mo' betta. What is the width of the base 18s?

flashburn 03-16-2011 11:14 AM

After doing some searching, it looks like the widths are 8"/9".

m4a1mustang 03-16-2011 11:16 AM

Hmmm... I don't like that one bit! If they were 18x9 all around you could do a square 275 width setup.

I think most of the more serious trackers here are running 285s all around but thats too wide for those wheels.

flashburn 03-16-2011 11:17 AM

Yeah, that's why I was thinking for these wheels a square setup might not be best. :(

I heard the new Boss has a square setup. :stirthepot:

flashburn 03-16-2011 11:23 AM

Meh, if only I could afford it.

Anyway...

:p

I'd just put the widest RE-11 you can put on the base wheels. That'd probably be the best setup with what you have to work with.

flashburn 03-16-2011 11:35 AM

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking as well. Trying to figure out what's the widest tires I can "safely" mount on them. I've read a few people say they've gone up to 255/275, but I'm not sure how much that would be pushing it, since this will be specifically for the track, the setup will be stressed pretty heavily.

m4a1mustang 03-16-2011 11:37 AM

As long as you are within manufacturer spec for the tire you will be OK.

flashburn 03-16-2011 12:00 PM

From looking at Bridgestone's site it looks like the max I could run is: 245/40R18 and 275/40R18.

Red__Zed 03-16-2011 12:30 PM

you should be able to get star specs in the sizes for the base rims.

flashburn 03-16-2011 05:40 PM

Why the Star Specs? How do they compare against the RE-11's? Also Bridgestone has a $70 rebate right now, so that's another plus.

cossie1600 03-16-2011 05:48 PM

if you want to go fast and can drive, do not get stagger. if you are worried abut safety, run 255 or 265 all around. i run 285 all around on the stock 9 and 10 and on 9.5" wheels

flashburn 03-16-2011 05:51 PM

According to the tire spec's, a 8" wheel isn't within the specs of the 255 size.

cossie1600 03-16-2011 08:55 PM

it will fit and it probably wont even bulge. i run 285 on my 9" rim

flashburn 03-17-2011 07:05 AM

Okay, looks like the only 255 size available for the RE-11's is 255/35R18. Will that size work good on the stock 18's all around?

Waqar 03-17-2011 08:53 AM

I am using RE11's 245/45/18 and 275/40/18

the ratio is almost 100% with stock tyres, speedo etc same as stock

no bulge or anything

i personally wouldnt, the tire is too small. you will end up spinning a lot of tires and probably result in more gear changes. i have 285 30 18 on my track wheels, way too small

flashburn 03-17-2011 10:42 AM

Well, if 255 is too small for the back, and I shouldn't stagger, it looks like I'm ******? Not sure what to do, but I certainly can't afford to go and buy different wheels.

cossie1600 03-17-2011 10:56 AM

stay with 245 all around if you have to. i used to run 235 all around on my 350, it worked fine. stay away from stagger if you can drive, stagger kills the balance on this car. i just paid 1200 bucks to unstagger my setup.

think of it this way, your tire bill will be half as much as mine.

i dont know what yourr budget is, but you should be able to get some 18x9.5 for 500 and sell your oem set for like 400

cossie1600 03-17-2011 10:58 AM

i just see your car isnt stock, 245 is probably too small

cossie1600 03-17-2011 11:16 AM

i just did some math. a set of re11 in 265 fon your size is roughly 1200 bux. you can actually buy a set of 18x9.5 konig for 650 and get a set of kumho xs in 275 35 18 for 800. you might want to do that instead. i am stuck with the stock 19s because of class issue

flashburn 03-17-2011 12:22 PM

Ugh, I hate the idea of buying ANOTHER set of wheels, since I already bought the base 18's off of someone else.

How do the Kumho XS tires compare to RE-11's?

Also where are you seeing those prices? Prices were substantially higher at TireRack ($888 for the tires before shipping).

F... I really don't want to buy another set of wheels.

cossie1600 03-17-2011 12:31 PM

you can probably break even selling the 18s you got. as someone who has 4 set of rims for a prius and 3 sets for the z, i know how you feel about rims and tires

www.tires.com has better pricing than tirerack, get the konigs mounted with kumho xs, it will be cheaper. xs is roughly the same as the re11 at the track, but they are noisier and they are slower in the rain. i went with re11 as 285 35 19 is cheaper with the bridgestone. 275 35 18 is a different story.

i will sell you my 5zigens with race rubber for $950 hehe

flashburn 03-17-2011 12:41 PM

I have another idea, but it might be a long shot... I'm going to see if anyone selling their base 18's would be interested in splitting them up and I'd buy the rears. Then I should be able to run 275/35/18 all around (or maybe 285). I'm doubting I'll find any takers for my offer though.

You might have better luck buying a full set, since they go pretty cheap these days.

The offset would be pretty aggressive up front though.

cossie1600 03-17-2011 12:43 PM

the cost of that will probably equal to buying a set of konigs, plus not sure how the offsets will fit as nissan runs some annoying offset. i tried to cheap out and run 35 offset all around, the rear is tucked in pretty good ajd the front is probably further out than what i would like

flashburn 03-17-2011 12:53 PM

Meh, this blows.

Which konigs can you get for $650?

cossie1600 03-17-2011 01:05 PM

yup, i just ranted about paying 1200 on the re11s in 19s. dont feel bad

kong milligram lighning zero in and some other ones go for 175 at discount tires with 50 dollars rebate. get it in 18x9.5 with 45mm in front and 25mm in the back. you would get some cheap track use out of it. as an idiot who track too much, mmy word 9of advice is dont waste money on fancy volk wheels. also the whole oem setup doesnt make sense if you are not class limited. it would be like me designing my own oil cooler kit for 610 instead of buying one for 645

flashburn 03-17-2011 01:17 PM

I'm not seeing a spot on tires.com to choose the offset.

I'm just seeing 18X9.5 5-114.3 25GBL, which I'm guessing 25GBL is the offset, but no other options to choose a different offset.

edit: Not to mention, no Kumho XS are available in my area, so it doesn't even let me select them. Same with RE-11's. This **** is getting annoying.

cossie1600 03-17-2011 01:49 PM

when do you need it by?

25 is the offset, gbl is the color.

you need 45 offset in front and 25 in rear

cossie1600 03-17-2011 01:50 PM

i paid for a set of re11 yesterday, wont be here until the end of the month. i know how you feel man, my *** is still hurting from the dry anal

My next track event is end of April, so around a week before then.

So I did find someone that could sell me just the rear base 18's. This offset + my spacers won't work for the front though, right?

cossie1600 03-17-2011 02:11 PM

if you have spacers, you can probably buy 4 25mm wheel and use the 15 or 20mm in the front.. thats even better! you can rotate your tires! i run 35mm as a compromise so i dont have to use spacers!

order them today, you will have it by end of month i bet. you will love the 275 35 18 setup, stagger setup are mainly for looks and safety in a front engine car. (or class limitation).

cossie1600 03-17-2011 02:14 PM

just double check the konig clear over the sports caliper

sell your oem 18s on the maxima forums, those guys love it

Why would you run spacers up front? The rears need lower offsets than the front.

cossie1600 03-17-2011 02:14 PM

what is the offset and size on the stock 18s?
