here's a daytime update when i just finished it. i have to find out a way to keep them on longer before it starts fading away. i've been painting in 30-40F weather, using a heat gun, and applying 2 coats of Testor's flat white paint.

I hope you are trolling instead of being serious. The OP painted his, but you can get tires with colored lettering. Check out the tire companies websites'. That would have taken less time than signing into the forum to post a question and wait for an answer, lol!

For anyone trying to do this, it requires more patience than I thought. Use the "slap tire pen" to white out your tires.

Dragon_Ball_Z 09-21-2015 02:41 PM

How long does this lettering last? anybody know??

kenchan 09-21-2015 07:26 PM

Probably tired of it by evening.

There are a couple companies that make tire stickers made of rubber. They have permanent/semi permanent options. You basically just glue the letters one-by-one to the sidewall. Any type of white lettering on your tires will eventually brown. Using the tire paint pens will brown much faster than using tire stickers. Paint pens may stay white a few days to a couple weeks, depending on how often you drive/how clean the road is you're driving on/how well you prepped the tire before application.

Here's my car at a track day this past spring. I had finished the rear tires the day before, and they had already turned brown from the surface I was driving on. The fronts stood up just fine.

Thank you for the reply. I am trying to paint mine this color orange and I would like it to be permanent. I am not sure if this orange will turn a different color after awhile or not. http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/09...611ef472f1.jpg

This is so early 1980's when the only thing flashy we had was white letter tires. LOL

grobie 09-23-2015 05:36 AM

Looks great! Hope the color stays....if not, check out that website "tread-wears", They may have colored letters. I have had mine on for about a year....no issues, no fading. They are a B*#&h to glue on though.

nismo2evox 09-23-2015 11:35 AM

Wow! I think the lettering looks awesome.

It's a cool, relatively cheap mod that really makes the car stand out. And it looks really clean too.

Did those who did it just stencil the embedded letters in the tire or did you use a stencil you made yourself? Also, what paint/paint pens did you use and where did you get them.

Thanks!

I used to do this on my sport bikes, track bikes and one of my old cars. It works best on tires that aren't brand new. It will last a while on a DD depending on your driving habits. If you track your car it cuts paints life way down due to the heat cycling (white will turn light brown). Be prepared to spend a good amount of time applying it initially (2 coats for best results) and doing touch ups and upkeep. White is hardest color to keep looking fresh and clean.

Dragon_Ball_Z 09-28-2015 01:41 PM

I want orange lol, I'm honestly wanting to make this permanent on the tire but don't know if they make rubber paint or should the lettering work http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/09...74cafb8f9d.jpg

Any paint marker found at an arts and crafts store will work. It's semi permanent, in that you may have to touch up the paint after a few months depending on weather and road conditions sun fading or cracking the paint. Otherwise you should be good to go.
