Dealer paying to repaint wheels...thoughts?

So, my dealer has agreed to repaint the stock sport wheels after they damaged the finish while changing to the winter rims.

My question is: Do I have them repainted as stock, or do I modify the paint scheme a little while they are in being redone.

I have the Black Rose paint (Black Cherry in the US) and I was thinking of having them use the Black Rose as the base colour before they overspray the silver. At the same time, masking off the inside of the wheels behind the spokes when they spray the silvers so the inner wheel is Black Rose to match the car, but still silver on the outside of the wheel.

This will probably be an additional small charge to change the paint from a black base and to mask off the inside of the wheels during the silver spray, but I think it might be worth it.... what do you guys think??

EDIT: Added XAN's photochopped image of what I want....

I'd get them to match the 40th anniversary wheels we have in the US. Not sure if the Black Edition has the same color. The wheels in my sig are from the 40th anni image from the Nissan site. :)

uggghhh. I saw a Black Rose delivered to the dealer with 40th wheels on it by mistake. Looked terrible on the car! I like the 40th wheels, they just don't match with the Black Rose at all IMO...
Thanks for the input though!

Just painting the inside of the wheel is a waste of money, you'll hardly notice it.
(assuming you mean the real inside behind the spokes)

wheee! 11-27-2010 08:09 PM

I thought it might be a subtle mod and it might make the silver overspray a slightly different tinge as well....

Xan 11-27-2010 08:10 PM

If you want a subtle hint of purple, just mix a tiny amount into the silver and hope it doesn't turn pink. :)

wheee! 11-27-2010 08:10 PM

That would be ghey... lol

Xan 11-27-2010 08:11 PM

How about darker golden wheels?

wheee! 11-27-2010 08:12 PM

ooooooo 24k gold plated wheels!

reality check.... nope

I like the silver accents on the car too much to change the colour scheme that much.

m4a1mustang 11-27-2010 08:14 PM

You don't really have any options with that color. I mean, at this point, all you can do is have them repainted stock or call Martha Stewart and see what she has to say.

wheee! 11-27-2010 08:15 PM

lol... Steve! Where ya been buddy!

If you still have her number in your cell, give her a call for me!

Oh you know, just been working on that deck...

I'll give her a call. :icon17:

m4a1mustang 11-27-2010 08:29 PM

Martha said a darker gold/bronze, otherwise keep them silver.

Xan 11-27-2010 08:42 PM

Martha is just copying me...

Ok, how about this? (ruff turbo-shop)

Hey Xan, nice job! I thought of that too, but I wanted a more subtle look. What about the reverse of that with the step lip & inside still purple and the spokes & main lip silver?

Basically the step lip would be the only real clue to the inside colour till you looked closer...

m4a1mustang 11-28-2010 11:19 AM

I don't think you can pull off a two-tone look with the Rays since they were really designed to be a one color finish.

I could mark it up for you, but irl you are going to hate it, the dark paint will blend into your tires and make your rims look tiny.

wheee! 11-28-2010 03:32 PM

I don't know. Maybe it would be okay. Give it a shot! Thnx!

Close! Gotta leave the main lip silver on the outside. Just the small one inch lip is still Black Rose....

Damm your good! :tiphat:

Lol, you're lucky it's a 1 minute job to change... I'll get you your final one tonight.

wheee! 11-29-2010 02:13 PM

You're the best, I don't tell you that often enough..... :roflpuke2:

Xan 11-29-2010 07:15 PM

You don't appreciate me enough... :)

Anyways not much paint left....

wheee! 11-29-2010 07:20 PM

That's it! That's the look! Very subtle and yet still there. What do YOU think?

Xan 11-29-2010 07:49 PM

I think it's a waste of money and you won't see it in real life. :)

Just as an indicator, my 40th wheels aren't even painted the same color on the inside, they are matt grey on the inside. Nobody ever notices it...

wheee! 11-29-2010 08:12 PM

But then again, the dealer is paying for the respray, three coats. If I change one colour and have them mask the inner wheel and small lip portion it should not be so bad....

Again, I like the sleeper, subtle look of the mod. I still love the silver wheels....

Anyone else have an opinion? Bueller... Bueller... Bueller.....

wheee! 12-02-2010 04:28 PM

So after talking with the dealer, I have found out that the wheels need the black base layer to get the proper silver effect on the Rays... this means I will have to apply the Black Rose after the wheels are painted. Fine.
I called a body shop in town and they have the ability to make a spray can of the Black Rose paint so I am going to custom mask and paint these myself after the dealer is done with the factory respraying.
Cost of the spray bomb and the clearcoat is less than $50, not too bad!

djpathfinder 12-02-2010 06:09 PM

I agree with Xan...wouldn't be noticeable at all. You'd be wasting $50. IMO, have the wheels painted a colour that's a combination of dark grey with black cherry. That will be killer - darker wheels that stand out (different shade...not murdered) from the body, yet compliment it at the same time...sort of like what the 40th wheels do for the 40th quartz paint. Keep it monotone.

BalanBro 12-02-2010 07:11 PM

Of all suggestions, I'm liking this one:

I like it too, but my main concern is the level of difficulty getting the masking just right so it looks good in the final product. Too many soft curves where the spokes join the lip...

wheee! 12-08-2010 01:32 PM

Looks like I am not the only one that likes the idea of a matched trim ring....

djpathfinder 12-08-2010 02:05 PM

You actually notice it on the lip face of that Vossen wheel. Won't on the barrel behind the rotors.

stock, color match, or a gun metal.

Thank you! See, i'm not the only one who thinks you should go monotone. :). Just being devil's advocate, Wheee! If you let yourself think you're right all the time then you'd be a wom...nevermind. LOL J/K!

Well, the wheels came back pretty much in factory finish... The paint process for Hyper Silver is very finicky and needs a special black underlay. Therefore the paint shop could only do the factory finish and THEN apply any kind of special colour. Having said that, the finish on the wheels is better than factory at the moment!

Bottomline is I took them as factory finish from the paint shop while I decide which way to go. I am thinking that I will probably go this route in the end...

http://i888.photobucket.com/albums/a...plewheels4.jpg

It looks like the easiest way to get the look and the masking is not too complex to achieve the desired result.

I might even do it myself as the paint shop will prepare my factory colour for me in a spray can for easy DIY application. Being as it is the inside of the wheels, I think I can pull this off myself without too much trouble. Having said that, I am more than a little OCD so the job will be done to the highest level possible!

BennytheBlade 12-24-2010 05:02 AM

Your the one who has to be happy w/ it so thats all that matters. Personally if I had a "freebie" like your getting and having to go thru all the trouble to get the wheels redone, I would want something more noticible and unique, but if your looking for subtle, I think the one youve chosen is just that.

Hope it turns out the way you want.
