Nismo factory rims powder coated GR-02

Just picked my Nismo factory rims up from the powder coaters a couple hours ago, the color is Cardinal GR-02 Steel Gray Pearlecent. Price was $340 out the door at a place called Exclusive Powder Coating in Valencia, they are open 24hrs, which worked for me :-) I'll post up some more pics when they are installed, probably Saturday morning, need to get them installed before the Cerritos meet Saturday night

Yeah, about 60 miles, but they are the only place open 24hrs. Most are only 8am-4pm, that doesn't work for my schedule. It was funny, but I actually dropped them off at 1am in the morning :icon17:

Rasengan 03-12-2010 11:31 AM

great look! i got the nismos too but in stock color and was thinking of powder coating them later down the line after i start getting rock chips or curb rash

how long did the process take? also, did you have to get the tires unmounted first or would they have done that for you? i only have the wheels on my car without a spare set so i'm hoping they can do the unmounting themselves and i can just leave the car there while they work on the wheels

SoCal 370Z 03-12-2010 11:33 AM

MC1, I notice a small imperfection...I think you need to take them back!

370z4Steve 03-12-2010 12:23 PM

looks good..given the color hard to tell you might come out looking rather monochrome with your PG Z and painted wheels now..

rockstar eh? :)

Had to bring the wheels in with the tires off, they don't do mounting there, just the powder coating. it took a week to get them back.

I was worried about that, but they are a good shade darker, hopefully it will be a good contrast  Yep I've done a bit of playing :tiphat:

SoCal 370Z 03-13-2010 12:05 AM

MC1, you're always adding some small detail to everything Z. Will you be painting the "NISMO" letters? Red or black? ;

Ha, I am considering it, have some older photoshops, I'll have to photoshop these once I get them installed to see how it looks

Cyberium 03-13-2010 11:43 AM

Gotta love CA. I mean a 24 hour powercoat place... lol. You'd be lucky to find a gas station open past 8:00pm around here.

God I hate Vermont... I need to move back to NY

Bad news, I don't know why this happened, maybe Mike can shed some light on it. It's just peeling off, not baked long enough, or didn't prep the wheel. They said they were going to strip it, but it looks like the original coating is still on underneath.

FuszNissan 03-13-2010 09:07 PM

man that sucks, hope they can correct the issues

Truly sorry this happened to you. As they say, "prep is everything" and these guys missed the boat.

jmlenz 03-14-2010 12:36 AM

holy crap that is terrible. I had my wheels powdercoated (paid exactly the same as you BTW) and this def did not happen. Finish is very tough and didnt even scratch with tire mounting. Powdercoat was Sherman Williams I believe.

schrute 03-14-2010 12:43 AM

Definitely sorry to see this, hope the shop makes it right!

nuTinmuch 03-14-2010 01:55 AM

...and my powdercoating fears are back.

vortrex 03-14-2010 04:00 AM

I guess maybe that's why the price was so low? in SF I was quoted $150 per wheel, but the guy does a great job with the proper prep.

Yeah, it sucks, kind of took the fun out of my new wheel install
I'll probably take the wheel back on Monday. I did manage to make it over to the Cerritos meet, although very late, was still fun to hang out with everyone.
I'll try to get some better shots (not camera phone) in the daytime.

IDK, I got quotes from 4 different coaters, they were all $65 to $85 per wheel.
This place was actually on the high side, I went with them because they were open 24hrs, thought they had a pretty good reputation. I guess you can never tell.

schrack150 03-14-2010 04:26 AM

looks good, but take them back and get them redone! At least you know they can't duck you lol. 24hrs right? :p

Mike 03-14-2010 02:31 PM

that is definitely an undercure issue. completely stripping or just scuffing the wheels before coating really doesn't make a difference. I have a set of track wheels for my corvette that I did zero prep to just to see how they would turn out and hold up. Just took them out of the box and coated over the factory paint, and they went through several tire changes without a problem.

Yours however, are definitely not fully cured. The first set of wheels I ever did for a friend had that same problem, and I learned they take a good amount of time to come up to temperature, so they have to cure a little longer than most things.

So prep is as important when powder coating compared to painting? Here is a couple more pics of the rims, they definitely didn't chemically strip or sandblast like they said they would (which I paid extra for, bc they said it needed it) There is a tiny bit of scuffing on some parts, but where the curve is, it's the original coating and really smooth. it just peels off with your fingernail.

My big concern is that the other rims will start to do it  I'm not sure if I feel comfortable taking all of them back to this place again, kind of like sending food back to the chef. I might see if I can get my money back, or at least for the one rim, and just take them to another place.

To be honest, I'm not real happy with the color either, but that's not there fault, I actually had a sample that was labeled Cardinal GR-02 from another place.Turns out it wasn't GR-02, the GR-02 has a slight blue metallic in in it, which is what I didn't want. They did it the right color, the sample I had was labeled incorrectly from the other place, so I got pooched either way.
