Plasti-Dip 'Metalizer' on wheels (Gold)

I saw a couple threads pertaining to painting stock wheels as well as Plasti-dipping and just wanted to share my experience with this miracle product plasti-dip. I chose to dip my 40th graphite wheels gold and after a short trip to Pep Boys which yielded 2 cans of black and 3 cans of gold I was ready to DIY! :happydance:

This was my first time using the metalizer and I had doubts it would leave a rich gold color because the cap is a translucent color. To start I just scrubbed the wheels and let em dry. I taped up all along the tires, calipers/rotors, lugs and center cap. I newspaper and taped the hell out of the car although it's not completely necessary... There are tons of youtube videos where they just peel the plasti dip off the tire after drying and there's a perfect later adhered to the wheels.

So anyways, I put on 3 coats of regular black as a base coat (because it's much cheaper) and hit it with 5 or 6 coats of gold and the final product came out pretty nice.

Had to sneak in a pic with the goat ;)

Overall it's a super easy way to change the color of your wheels to the tune of about $40 and a couple hours of your time. Not to mention I love how smooth they came out. They also have many other metalizer colors like aluminum, gunmetal and an inbetween silver.

Nice. Get some 25&20mm spacers and call it a day. That lip looks really good on your car too man, nice pick up!

Thanks for the hookup brotha. Spacers, springs (maybe coilovers) and test pipes are next but I'm not gonna call it a day at that!

Was about to pull the trigger on some shine auto amuse parts but I guess the cheaper/easier/fun mods should take priority

you really cant beat it. I like the stock wheels but it is fun to play with colors. And its cheap! Our wheels are so wide in the back that after a few trips to the car wash the drivers rear wheel will start to rub the plastidip off. Once that happens I may just paint them black again or try another fun color. Dipyourcar.com is a good place to buy unique colors, or amazon carrys most of them.

Woooah I was looking for a more bronzy/copper finish but Pep Boys didn't have this. If I do it again I'd love to try a mix of bronze and gold to get a nice brembo gold-ish color

It was too easy, and it was actually fun lol. I think dipping a whole car would be a pain in the a$$ not to mention you would need gallons of this stuff but for wheel purposes it's practical, easy and you can switch colors as long as you have the patience

Anyone want to go lime green or hot pink?? :roflpuke2: I think I've even seen a camo for anyone that's bold enough hahaha

P.S. It's been about two weeks and the color seems to have faded. The black is coming through a bit and it looks more like a burnt gold. Kinda cool actually but I'm sure another can of gold would fix it right up.

Do you have pics of the faded gold?

SilverValk01 06-22-2015 05:36 PM

did you consider spraying glossifier over the gold when done? perhaps that would help with the fade? getting me some new tires this weekend and i was thining about doing this after wards. looks great btw.

That turned out pretty good! I like the shade of gold. Just dont pressure wash them!

Do you have to spray the black first in order for it to peel away when you want to remove it? Or will the gold peel off just as easy?

you need the black as a base coat for the gold. The gold is just a metalizer, not sure it would work well without the base coat. It should peel off the same as the color doesn't really affect the material properties of the plastidip
