you need the black as a base coat for the gold. The gold is just a metalizer, not sure it would work well without the base coat. It should peel off the same as the color doesn't really affect the material properties of the plastidip

You can also do different color base coats for different looks. White Base makes it looks crazy bright. I once tried a red base with only a little gold. Looked cool.
