VVEL control unlocked

I havn't been keeping up w/ this forum but I thought I'd post some news I heard today. My tuner texted me and said that UpRev has unlocked the VVEL cam signal and tuners are now able to download the new "Beta" software and start controlling cam timing. I'm heading to Houston now to drop the car off and let JTran retune and explore the new software. Uprev did testing on various VVEL ecu's including the one in my z. I was told there are two maps to adjust the cam timing, cam angle and cam lobe I think. Expecting decent gains w/ my current FI set up, maybe 35-40 whp depending on boost levels, etc.... The VVEL stock settings are way to advanced for FI, so retarding them will be the way to go. Crossing my fingers.

If this is true I'm stoked, I have a APT on Tuesday to get retuned for my SC set up. .Keep us posted on what happens, Thanx man

I understand the basics of VVEL, but can someone explain to noobs like me why tuning it will produce more power? What does "tuning the VVEL" even mean?

I can't wait for results.

Talked to Jared at Uprev about cam phasing and timing; he said its still in the development and another 2-3 months.
Maybe this is something for pro tuners only; in for the new gains.

Not even a chub, but a full out rock hard boner. Curious what this will do for just something stock?

The problem with the current VVEL settings and FI is that there is high overlap (i.e. intake and exhaust valves open at same time) such that the force inducted intake charge can blow right through the cylinder. By changing the timing and reducing the overlap you can capture more of that FI in the cylinder and make more power.

Maybe now we can finally start making the big power of the 350Z engines at similar boost levels :happydance:

elperuano 10-04-2012 07:05 PM

So for us FI guys this means more power at same boost level or better drivability? I like the idea of more power but I think we're already at the safe zone these motors can handle. Anymore power n I think we'll be risking the longevity of the motor or it blowing up no?

Interested to see whats done...

Are they any gains to be made with no cams and just a tune? Just finished my N/A Tune with Randy from UpRev. If this is just in test phase then I'll wait till I get my F.I. LTH before I get another E-tune.

If there are significant gains to be made. Then I'm pulling the trigger on the JUN cams like now.

Lets see what happens:tup:

O&G 10-04-2012 08:09 PM

Ill have an update tomorrow. Car didn't make it on the dyno today. More power at lower boost levels in the future! Ill post before and after dynos, with boost levels, weather conditions, etc...

Just got off the phone with my tuner. Having a few issues downloading the beta software, Rom files, etc... The man over at uprev said they will have it sorted out jn the next few days. The software was released on the 3rd. They're releasing updates daily for the new software. Everything is still in the beta phase. My tuner is leaving for California next Wednesday but hopefully we will get some results before that. Keep y'all posted.

With VVEL unlocked, we can effectively move our powerband up the rpm range. I can see this being a benefit for all the guys with breather mods and little restriction. Pairing it with more aggressive exhaust cans will only make it better. I wonder how having an M370 intake manifold would be affected, it mag improve it's top end with tuning, or maybe not.
