Rear Tow Hook? (Similar to Nismo Turnkey)
So I'm aware that the 370z stock does not have a place to mount a rear tow hook, but me being a track addict, I would like to someday install one.
I'm in the process of converting to a Nismo body kit. I already have the front bumper and side skirts and soon to acquire a rear bumper. And while i'm at it I would like to take advantage of this time to cut neccessary holes, etc to mount a rear tow hook like the Nismo 370z Turnkey as shown. http://i358.photobucket.com/albums/o...ps5bdd04f7.jpg http://i358.photobucket.com/albums/o...pse492adae.jpg Has anyone tried or have installed a rear tow hook? Can someone let me know where would be a good place to mount it? I can custom fabricate something but I'd like to know where's a good location to weld or bolt it to. Anyone have a picture of a 370z without a rear bumper? Thanks! |
The Z does have a place to install the a tow hook in the rear, under the square panel in the rear bumper.

Actually I was wrong. There is nothing under there. Typically there is but for whatever reason there is a square but no threads behind it.
|
There are however two tie downs that are in the back under each side but the manual says they shouldn't be used for towing. I bet you those back tie downs could be used to get you out of a tire wall however, which is pretty much the only reason they might tow you from the rear.

Is it safe to assume that nobody has one installed one? |
I believe it is a tow hook but in japan only.... we just don't have the bar threaded... you could easily take the crash bar off and have one welded a piece and thread it...?
|
anyone know the thread / pitch (i.e. M10) for our front Tow Hook? I'm trying to custom fab one myself.
|
Check out this post on a 350z site. It has the thread and pitch and has some good ideas as well.
|
Our front tow hook is M24.

Is that from Doran's shop? I take it you live in Lebanon, Ohio, I live right by there. |
I work for Doran racing

Pretty sure that's an exhaust hanger mount point...?

It very well could be I have not really looked under a street car and the only one that I have had single side exhaust on it
|
I have yet to take the stock bumper off and see if I can weld something onto the bumper like the way they did for the front. I just noticed that the Nismo oem bumper does not have a cap to pop off.
It will most likely involve me cutting a slit into the rear bumper like the Turnkey Nismo one. The only thing I still need to find out is if I can use the same exhaust hanger mount for the tow as our exhaust is routed differently. |
|
Looks like it!
|
yes, the JDM versions have the threaded impact bar to accommodate a rear tow hook! We dont get crap here!

on the non nismo Z there is a cap right above where the lower fog light is, that is the access to the rear tow hook but our cars don't have the threaded rear crash bar... you just need to weld and thread the crash bar...

Thanks Martin, I will use that location as a template. I'm in the middle of switching out the stock OEM bumper to the Nismo rear. It looks like JDM designed the Rear Nismo bumper to work with that rear tow hook.
I can machine a tapped block, I just gotta make sure I'm able to do a strong weld. |
I dont think they have it for the nismo bumper... I don't see a bumper cover on the nismo rear bumper....
http://stwot.motortrend.com/files/20...r-1024x640.jpg http://stwot.motortrend.com/files/20...r-1024x640.jpg Your best bet is to drill in same location off the stock bumper cover to the nismo cover... |
it looks to me that the nismo RC, removes the tow hooks that are on both sides of the rear.... for transport strap down only...? I saw those back there but ended up using the rear wheels to strap it down.
|
So if follow the JDM Stock Location of the Sports Rear Tow Location:
http://i358.photobucket.com/albums/o...psa660be1e.jpg Then the crash bar tow hook location for the Nismo is approximately here as shown (A little below the license plate): http://i358.photobucket.com/albums/o...ps32b26502.jpg But if you look at the Nismo Challege one shown it's lower (Under the skirt); perhaps it's not the same location? http://i358.photobucket.com/albums/o...ps53bbd1d5.jpg |
Yeah I just noticed that... no idea!!
They could have drilled or welded the tow hook on the lower end of the crash bar, moving it a few inches lower? |
custom tow hook on a 350z.
http://a2.ec-images.myspacecdn.com/i...eaacb21c/l.jpg Maybe that nismo challenge one has something similar to this welded at the bottom.... http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x...k/IMAG0063.jpg |
So, to revive a dead thread... How did this turn out? :p
|
Im needing to do a rear mount as well.. Any fresh ideas or anyone with custom rear mounts that can help?
|
Bump.. Who's done a rear mounted tow hook?
