An Australian Brake Experience
Travis .. the first area I attacked on my Z34 were the brakes. I have the Akebono brakes - these are standard on Aus-spec - and have been fitted with Endless pads (partno EP461TR for front and EP462TR for the rear), but more importantly I threw the standard rotors away and fitted DBA 5000-series rotors. I have access to a lathe so I was able to machine up hats for the rotors, and I also had to mill a section out of the outer caliper half to gain clearance for the bolt heads that mount the rotors onto the hats. The DBA rotors are DBA 52102SL and SR (slotted left and right). I also use Motul race brake fluid. I also removed the backing shield (it doesn;t do much anyway) and fitted a home-made brake cooling "plate" from 1.6mm ali to direct air into the centre of the brake rotor, which is secured to the lower suspension arm by a couple of water hose clamps.
At Sandown International Raceway here in Melbourne (3.2kms/lap) in a 1m30s lap there are three high speeds stops from 125mph+ down to 60-65mph and a couple of slower corners, and I have not had a moments trouble with the braking with this setup. I run with Stability Control off, but I have left the ABS on, but have to admit, that if the ABS is triggered, it is a pain in the arse as braking efficiency is reduced by at least 30%. There comes a point when you cannot drive deeper into a corner and expect the OEM electronics to help ... one the ABS is triggered, your only option is to get right off the brakes and allow it to reset, and that is usually not an option unless you have "lots" of runoff room. If you don;t have the Sport brake package - it might well be cheaper to go BBK as the machining costs won;t be cheap if you don;t have access to the machining capability. RB Quote:

here's vid from this weekends exploits... 1st lap was warm-up, 2nd/3rd under black flag, but better than nothing! Also, I didn't take the time to edit/clip the video, but did shoot in 1080p! switch your youtube over to HD and enjoy!
Location/Event: 26-Sep @ Chuckwalla Raceway - Private event... ~90F... Recent mods: added ballast to comply with NASA TTA Wheels & Tires: Forgestars + Nitto NT01s (to comply with TTA) Sponsors: Lou Fusz Nissan, Forged Performance, SRD Performance of Tempe |
I love the layout od this track Travis .... looks like an emphasis on cornering grip and transitions from left to right and back with only a couple of big stops - is the track rough, or it is that your car suspension is quite stiff (sorry - I have not had time to review your full build thread - there are nearly 80 pages of it) as there is quite a lot of bounce in the images. I can see that you are precise with your cornering lines as well .. close to indentical lines in each lap ... loved it !!

And those BMW's sure made for some fantastic rolling road blocks... |
Thanks... it really is a terrific track and I think as they add more creature comforts and a hotel nearby it is really going to do well... turn #9 was built to model the famous corkscrew and the 10 degree banked turn 'bowl' reminds me of nurburgring, but longer radius than the ring
the laps in this vid were ~2:15 laps vs my best time this weekend of 2:02... my reason for posting it was to share the track really, and it was the only video I captured the camera bounce is a function of stiffness of chasis and the fact that the camera is directly mounted to the roll cage... I run 18/16K springs |

I do have some rather crappy video that I shot that is a much faster pace... I accidentally shot in "manual" mode on the camera so the image isn't very good... but I'll see if I can dig that up |
Quote:
Gotcha though, I dont think I ever noticed a black flag in there... |
The pace in this video is faster... was on hoosiers and running ~3 seconds faster v nittos... 1 or 2 clean laps... unfortunately as I mentioned the camera work was off
|
Says its not available.

Go off a little around the 3:05 mark? |
yup, good eye... weekend is not complete without a little off road excursion... just two wheels! :) unfortunately, I later dropped the left two wheels and it took out part of my somewhat fragile custom alum exhaust
|
2 wheels off and sideways. That's how you know he was driving flat out.

Been a while since I updated this thread.... here's a video from today at Phoenix International Raceway (PIR)... I was running a TTA setup but switched to Hoosier race slicks to see how much time it would gain... verdict so far is good for 2.0 seconds at this track over my NT01s... and honestly more fun to drive! downside is MY GOD were these tires expensive haha
Almost have the RPM setting configured - just need to calibrate the software to my gearing... NO, it does not rev >10K lol |
great vids, great laps!
|
Says it's a duplicate video? Boo!
:D |
all fixed

Chuckwalla Valley Raceway Clockwise
26-Feb-2011 Moving to Florida, so this will likely be my last day - at least for a while - at Chuckwalla. Gave it my best but came up short of the production car track record. This first video is short. I catch up with a Ferrari 458 Italia and Lotus Two-Eleven. They blow me away on the straight... catch up again... Lotus spins out of the "bowl"... haha This video is me trying for the Chuckwalla track record... The best I managed was a 1:57.761 on Hoosier slicks... That's a couple seconds better than my previous PBT of 1:59 running counterclockwise on Nittos. CCW is typically 1 sec faster than CW at this track. Everyone was running 3-10 seconds slower than usual due to high winds and sand/silt blowing on the track. I'm sure I could have done better with a cleaner track... Oh well! Also, around the 10:15 mark I drop my left rear tire off of turn 3 and you can see the course record holder Z06 car get by me (he ran a 1:53ish on full slicks). In the drop, I cracked my Forgestar wheel and blew out the tire - had to limp back to the paddock Here's another vid for posterity - switched back to Nittos... slooow! lol... had started to rain FORTHCOMING |
Great videos and driving. Sucks about the rim and tire but I guess that's the name of the game. Time for the supercharger so the Italia can be firmly trounced :).

I'm trying to hold off on supercharging as long as possible!!!!!!! :bowrofl: |
