Post Your Track Setup!

Post you track setups and the effects on the car. Please make sure you tell us what kind of racing you do and your impressions. Examples of this include information about different alignment settings (camber, caster, toe, etc). Different tires, different tire sizes, etc. Suspension upgrades such as coilovers, swaybars, springs, etc. Aero components such as wings, splitters and diffusers. Ride height, spring rates, damper settings, etc. Brake pads, rotors, BBK, stainless lines, boosters, etc. The more info you include the more everyone can use to compare and make their own decisions. I know that this is partly subjective so it is important that you test stuff out well and that you are specific with your comments. Also try and keep changes to a single component at a time. If you have a combination of things, make sure you state that first. This thread can also be used to review track/performance related parts, for example brake pads, coilovers, and tires. The goal is to figure out what does what and how the car's behavior changes. Eventually, setting up your car will involve less trial and error, therefore maximizing the effectiveness of each change and minimizing wasted time and money. Pictures are always welcome.

I can't overstate how much help threads like this have been for the Miata guys. I copped a setup for my old '94 and I was amazed at the transformation of the car.

COR photog 01-30-2009 04:09 PM

Cant wait to see some sweet setups!!

TerribleONE 01-30-2009 04:30 PM

il post mine up once its complete...

THMotorsports 03-26-2009 04:00 PM

SPC has alignment kits out for the serious race alignments.

THMotorsports 03-30-2009 05:23 PM

We did an auto-x this weekend. I ran 40psi front and 34psi rear with the most success. I'm running 9k/7k custom springs. Hotchkis swaybars help reduce body roll especially in slalom.

Did you get to run an Auto-X with the stock sway bars for comparison?

The stock swaybars are honestly adequate in the front but way too soft in the rear. The car understeers like a pig from the factory.

I'm in stock class for this season so I can't change the rear bar, only the front one. I guess an alternative option would be to find and adjustable front bar that can go softer than stock.

RCZ 07-08-2009 10:31 AM

I'm bringing this thread back from the dead now that we have all had the car for longer and a bunch of us have alignments.

My current setup:
-2.1 F Camber
-2.1 R Camber
0 toe front
.05 toe IN rear

So far, not so bad, not so great. Obviously steering is a little livelier, but it feels almost a little heavier than when I had more negative camber front. Thats also in part due to the toe in rear. The car feels pretty poised, but has lost a little composure since I raised the rear a bit. Looks like I'm going to have to take the WHOLE car down about 1/3 inch, if not 1/2.

Also I think next alignment, its going to be -2.5 front, -2.1 rear.

Hows everyone else doing?

Scott@FontanaNissan 07-08-2009 10:57 AM

-3.2 F Camber
-2.2 R Camber
0 Toe all the way around

hey, another miata guy! i'm on the miata forum too. and yes, threads like this are enormously helpfull. just copy a good setup instead of wasting time and money experimenting.

does anyone know what the stock alignment settings are?

i'm thinking about going to 18" wheels for track and keeping the 19's for street. any good, lightweight 18's on the market that will fit this car? i'm thinking about keeping the same width for the tires.

Scott@FontanaNissan 07-08-2009 02:09 PM

^^^ 18's are definately a good idea for track setup...they are usually lighter, stronger, and tires are cheaper!!!

I can set you up with a set of custom made Forgestar wheels for the track. Give me a call!

Scott

RCZ 07-08-2009 10:29 PM

Hehe thats your STI? I know your car from NASIOC...or IWSTI I think. I thought that was EDO's car though...

Robi was supposed to come down to FL and tune my suspension...wonder if he is still coming...I think he already came and left.

Wait a minute... did Jon Drenas tune your car??

And my STI had very similar settings for the street / track ;)

Scott@FontanaNissan 07-08-2009 10:36 PM

Haha! Yeah that's me! I usually post on Nasioc at "Stinji"

I used to be sponsored by EDO but things changed...so now my shop sponsor is HB Speed and Jon tunes it...i'm much happier now ;)

From what I hear...Robi should be coming out your way pretty soon! Check the Evo M forums as they usually post up their trips there. If any of you get the opportunity to get their suspension tuned by Robispec...i HIGHLY recommend it!!! Robispec -- Defying physics...one car at a time ;)

lmao...I know Jon pretty well. Better than I'd like to sometimes.

Small world.

Yeah I would love to get tuned by Robi, but I've blown enough money as it is on alignments already. I was supposed to get a deal, but its still going to be $. I've heard great things though...maybe I'll reconsider.

Robispec 11-03-2009 12:07 AM

coming to AWD motorsports the 16th -19th lets talk!

RCZ 11-09-2009 05:20 PM

Robi remember that person that was asking for KW V3's for the 370z from you through Jon at HBSpeed that you seemed to completely blow off. That was me.

imag 11-09-2009 09:50 PM

We need people who are racing to post alignments - trying to do this one at a time with one alignment every couple months is going to take forever. That's part of what the Miata guys have going for them - people who are trying different setups on the track in the same day.

Not to discourage - I would love to see some good setups posted here. And there's no better time than the present to start comparing notes. I just wish we had more people who had the capability to tweak hourly to really get this car nailed.

RCZ 11-09-2009 10:17 PM

I posted mine in my journal....I like it right now, though its a little tailhappy.

funny you say that. i think the hotchkis front sway is MUCH to stiff, and my car has so much understeer its taken the fun out of driving it hard.

I had the same problem.

Get the SPC camber arms and set the front camber to between -2.0 and -2.5. The understeer will be completely eradicated.

What does this do to the longevity of your tires? Do you drive this car on the road with it set this way?

front tires are already showing slight uneven wear from dropping it ~1". while i dont mind cranking the camber, i think of it as sort of a band aide to the problem. even the rear bar set to the stiffest position, oversteer can only be achived by hard accelleration out of turns. :shakes head:

i mean, the car is STIFF. pulling into my driveway at an angle causes the rear inside tire to literally lift off the ground.

For me it increases the longevity of the tires. Even at -2.5 I am wearing more on the outside of my tires than I am on the inside.

I can achieve oversteer at any speed with the front camber adjusted. I certainly wouldn't increase camber to this extreme on a street driven only car or one that sees a lot of daily highway miles. However for right now highway puts little wear on my tires compared to the abuse they receive at auto-x.

For cars that see more street driving than track driving I think the Stillen sway bars are better. Hopefully the adjustable whiteline bars will be out soon as well, although I'm certain those will be pretty stiff as well.

Mike 11-10-2009 02:33 PM

I don't know the alignment specs of mine, but it is a normal street alignment.

With eibach springs, stillen sways and the square tire setup (275/35/18), the car is very neutral.

I'm sorry....but KW wasn't working with me on this chassis...at the time and as you can see that's now changed!

Revive lol, total noob here im trying to setup my car for track and this thread is super helpful. Question for you guys noticing many of these setups dont have customs arms like toe, traction, camber upper etc just stock arms. Been watching alot of hot version vids 😁😁😁 and noticing same, just good coilovers and thats it, can someone chime in or explain is it not necessary? May ive been around drift world to long hahahaha.

Elmo370z 11-25-2016 02:33 PM

You need to learn how the car behaves before buying all these suspension mods. Oil cooler, upgrade all fluids, brake pads and keep your fuel tank topped off or buy a cjm rrp.
