I finally got a chance to take EVO School I and II. Almost time for a new set of tires at all corners. I also installed the Stillen Sport Pads and while they have a great initial bite they do tend to fade even on our 40-60 second course. (Yes, I bedded them in)

Either way I'm still having fun and kicking ***. Next season I'll probably jump out of Street and into one of the modified classes. I really want more suspension adjustment and I think it's time for some race tires after 5 years in Street or Stock Classes.

Results from our last race on 22 Feb (I'm the only 370Z) Although BJ in the 350Z is effing fast too. :driving:

Nice driving!! You guys using 2014 rules or 2015? 2015 rules the 370Z moved to BS (you would have finished first in BS)

IMWEZL 02-24-2015 12:01 PM

We are 1 season behind in Hawaii. Our season normally runs from August-May since we co-use our lot with the Aloha State Fair.

The 370Z is really dominant in CS I can understand the jump to BS.

Ordered a set of Hawk Performance HP+ pads from Z1. My plan is to swap pads between events but I might daily them if I have events back to back weekends.

FPenvy 03-05-2015 08:17 AM

anyone have any advice for someone thinking about trying autox finally? lol

I've pulled that with my hp+ pads. Overall I liked em but more towards the end of their life they started to Not work so well for autocross. At that point I kept switching back to stock pads for some events because my hawk pads just refused to stop even though the pad had some life left.

Just sign up and go :driving:

Most all the local SCCA chapters have a good novice program. They will give advice on getting your car through tech inspection, and stuff like tire air pressures to run. They should also have a novice walk through to explain the layout of the course. Try to ride along with an experienced driver to get a look/feel of the course at speed. Have someone ride along with you, they can give you pointers on what to look for while out on the course. If you wanted you go attend an event and just ride along a few times, talk to other drivers and then prepare to drive the next event.

Just go out and have fun.

I had a $100 Z1 gift certificate I won at one of the local Nissan meets last year, so get them basically half price. Wanted to try something other than my OEM's.

solid advice. I plan on going to the first scheduled event and see what happens. been on tracks, drag strips, the dragon, etc just never tried auto x. seems like it could be something fun to do.

Pretty much what cruz said sums it up... You won't need to put as much prep into your car for AutoX as you would for a full on track day.

-Don't skip the track walk in the morning. You'll regret it if you DNF your first couple of runs because you got lost amongst the cones. You'll probably get somewhere between 7-10 runs in a day, around a minute'ish each. Make them all count.

-Ride alongs are hugely important if you're new to AutoX or the track layout. A turn might look huge as you're walking the track but things tend to seem a lot smaller/tighter when you're at speed. This ties in to not wasting runs.

-Invest in a decent set of magnetic numbers for your car. There are tons of sites that sell them for between $30-70 depending on how fancy you want them to look. Trying to sit there and create numbers and class letters out of blue tape on the side of your car is a pain in the ***, especially if it happens to be windy that day.

-Check the SCCA website or your local SCCA chapter's website for class rules (you'll want to get that right for when you order your numbers). A bone stock 370Z should be in the B Stock class according to the 2015 rulebook. You might be in the B stock prepared class judging by the mods in your sig, but check the book to be sure.

-Don't worry about other people's times. Focus on consistently improving your own times and not wasting runs with DNFs.

-Have fun.

It seems like every time I talk to someone about it I am told a different class... :rofl2:

So would a stock 370Z (non-Nismo) be A stock or B stock?

Slightly modded 370Z would jump to ASP?

I guess it doesn't really matter too much unless you are competing at national level. Every time I tech at my local SCCA autoX they basically just make sure the wheels are bolted on and your battery is tied down. Nobody checks things like treadwear rating on tires, suspension mods, etc.

cruzthepug 03-06-2015 01:57 PM

Who's ready for AutoX season??

The 3 classes that the 370z falls under are:

B Street
STR (max 255 wide tire)
ASP

You should play by the rules regardless what level of competition.

Also, it's not up to the tech person to put your car in a class. You can ask the tech or registration for advice on what class you should run, but it's up to the driver to class their own car.

Our local rule for mods is, most are not looked at that closely until you beat someone who cares.

I feel sorry for poor souls(Nismo Z owners) battling S2000 CRs, C5 Z06s and Cayman S in A street. Scca should write a formal letter of apology to all nismo owners for what they did :(.

Agreed. Trust me when I say this, you'll literally see people cheat in front of you. Especially in Street class. They are only cheating themselves. Just do the right thing and when you beat them in your legal car, satisfaction is guaranteed.

FPenvy 03-09-2015 07:45 AM

so what class would my Z fall under being that i'm running breathers, tune, and 305 tires in the rear?

PharmDZ 03-09-2015 07:56 AM

Sounds like ASP to me FP. Welcome to the land of crazy built STis and Evos! Haha it's fun regardless of class. I've beaten some pretty quick turbo AWD cars there before. Makes it more competitive and challenges me more.

Sounds like ASP but without a complete list of mods (suspension, drivetrain, etc.) I can't say definitively.

no suspension mods. only intake, exhaust, and tune. also a 34 row oil cooler. most are listed in my sig.

Just the intake takes you out of BS

seems kinda dumb that a small power adder bumps you up into a class with Ferraris and whatnot.

gomer_110 03-09-2015 10:23 AM

In all reality ASP is primarily Evo's, WRX's (including STI's), and Solstices with the occasional MR2 thrown in. The Z is definitely an underdog in my opinion given that the boost buggies are able to make 400+ hp and 400+ ft-lbs at the wheels along with weighing ~400 lbs less.

03threefiftyz 03-09-2015 11:24 AM

I'd be wearing a jacket if I had run my BSP car in ASP last year...

I'm planning on installing and bedding the Hawk pads today, to switch back to OEM pads do they need any bedding, or just install and go?

So my stock 370Z with just K&N short rams and 245/285 tires falls into ASP now because of the intakes? I'm screwed haha

j-rho 03-15-2015 01:36 PM

Yep. If you downsize to 255 on 9's all the way around, you could run STR.

cruzthepug 03-22-2015 04:51 PM

Who's ready for AutoX season??

Only run I recorded at Evo School yesterday, last run of the day. This course setup I had run a 27.72 and a 28.11, my instructor challenged me to run a 27.2, I ran 26.82. Overall I learned a lot and really had some good times with the instruction, only the Z06's were running faster. I've got to work on my hand work, they stayed on me about the way I turn the wheel.

gomer_110 03-22-2015 07:47 PM

IMHO you had one of the best in the business. Had Sam as an instructor last year and learned more in 5 min. than I probably had in the course of my entire 2.5 seasons of doing autox.

First points event this weekend at Milton Frank Stadium. Should be fun
