As I understand it, Texas has had this law for some time, but there was an oversight in some legislative session the failed to specify a penalty. Consequently many PDs ceased to stop people for it. Here's the link

FWIW, I was stopped stopped twice within a month or so around 3 yrs ago after Flower Mound got their automatic scanner, and then again in Farmers Branch. In both cases I told the officer that I had the plate under my seat and said I had no intention to mount it because it made my Z32 look like crap. I also told him if he wanted to write me up then I would sit there and make sure that he wrote up every other car that passed w/o one which I counted was about 1 in 6 at the time. Both muttered something about being able to arrest me if they wanted to; but then let me go.

I expect the new law will cause some to start aggressively enforcing again, esp. since they seem to love their new automatic scanners. I pretty much know exactly where I'll be stopped again; and not sure how I'll handle this time. At least I'm driving a different car now.

Well it looks like I will be putting on the front plate. I have never been a true fan of the plates off to the side so I may just go with the stock one. I have seen a lot of high-end cars that have the front plate on them and I don't think they look all that bad, however just like everyone else I hate the thought of putting holes in the front!!!

Front License Plates NOT Mandatory

Texas Legislature 83(R) 2013, House Bill 657, effective September 1, 2013 states: Sec 504.011 ISSUANCE AND DISPLAY OF LICENSE PLATE a: Notwithstanding anything in this code to the contary, the department shall issue only one license plate for the attachment at the rear of the vehicle for which the plate is issued.
b: Not withstanding anything in this code to the contrary a person is entitled to operated on a public highway a vehicle that displays only one license plate if the plate is attached to the rear of the vehicle. A person may operated on a public highway a vehicle that displays two license plates if both plates were assigned by the department for the registration period as a set of plates.
c. In any provision of this code that relates to the issuance or display of "license plates", "plates", or a "set of plates", the term means only one license plate.

Go to Texas Legislature OnLine and look it up.

I did and the voting record says "Adjourned Sine Die" meaning it expired without ever coming to a vote.

my source

If you think this is incorrect, please post yours.

Tx Legislature

I see and thank you for your post. My sources were the same, LegiScan and Tx Legislature OnLine. But I did not come across. Tha "Adjourned Sine Die" dated 03/12/2013. I think you are correct. It is a shame that it is so difficult for someone outside the law profession, to find actual up to date info. I am sorry I don't know how to add the link for the page I was looking at.
Mean while, my front plate will stay in the trunk.

TexasChuck 09-02-2013 03:52 PM

Itullos is right!

HB 657 was introduced Mar 12' 2013 which is Stage 1. And that's as far as it has gone. HB 625, which was listed in the NBCDFW link from sexZness, is about the penalty for driving without a license plate ( nothing stated about front or rear) is a misdemeanor with a max fine of $200. HB 625 , IMHO, is without a license plate whatsoever. So, I'm done with this trival bs.
Regards

FWIW, part of that same section of the legislative code states that you must use the plates that are issued by DPS. (Sec. 504.943):

Quote:

a person commits an offense if the person operates on a public highway, during a registration period, a motor vehicle that does not display two license plates that:
(1) have been assigned by the department for the period
Underground Graphics here in Houston offer replicas of the MyPlates (but not sure about Euro plates). AutoGeek has Euro plates but they don't have the Texas logo.

That sucks. Does this apply to all states? I'm sure it varies right?

Drove from Lubbock to Austin last month (before Sept. 1st) and was pulled over twice within 15 minutes for not having a front plate. Luckily, after much convincing, I was only given warnings. Not sure after this new legislation if I would get that lucky again. Especially with DPS' new digital trackers that records all past interactions, tickets or even warnings. =/

According to an HPD officer who also owns a Z, the show n go plate bracket is illegal. Don't know why, not sure you would ever get pulled over for it, but that's what he says.

Reading this just now.. so from what im reading its required now? THAT SUCKS!!

other question are these allowed? because I dont want to drill holes on the bumper..

Vehicle licensing/registration is state-by-state. I seriously doubt that a "reproduction" plate would be legal in any state. But I'm no lawyer.

Move to Arkansas! No front plates. :)

I'd rather get the "no front plate" ticket than the "fake front plate" ticket.

They don't have front plates because too many folks were getting hit standing in the street trying to sound out what the plates say.

God bless hooked-on foe-hon-ix.

It's what I've used for the last 3 years without any problems. Just make sure you put it on nice and tight otherwise the plate will rotate left or right and not sit level which looks like utter crap. It rotates from the wind and such when driving highway speeds 65+ if not properly tightened.

verdict. 12-02-2013 04:06 PM

Haven't had any issues without running a front plate on the Z. I've been stopped before for other reasons, and have even told the officers I did not have a front plate, but they didn't even blink or say anything about not having one.

However, I have custom plates -- I wonder if they are more lenient to those with custom plates -- since you technically give the city/county a little extra for them yearly?
