A Robben Hadoken cuts left & tries to get off a shot between eight defenders. It's only effective when playing a slow defense (Zangief?).

:icon17: Love the guy, but you're right, he does not deviate one bit from the norm, runs along the sideline, or cuts in across the box for a left footed shot, I think Spain figured that out, it was only when he went at the defense in the middle of the field, that he looked the most dangerous.

Robben is blindingly fast, but he's a straightline player who's not a great passer of the ball (his lack of passing skill is why he's played on the right-- if he's going to throw in shitty crosses from the left, why not put him on the right so he can cut in & shoot).

Red370 07-14-2010 10:36 AM

haha, I cant wait for Blue to chime in...

Don't get me wrong-- I'd love to have him on my team, but I'd much rather a Pedro or Iniesta who can move around the field & do damage from other places with both their passing or shooting.

Or, speaking purely hypothetically since we know he's not a team player, but just based on his skill set, a CRonaldo.

What do you guys say to having this thread become the official football thread & having it stickied?

I agree, not sure if i'd go with Pedro, I dunno, to me he just seems to lack that final decision, just watching the WC, the guy would get in positions to set his teammates up or score and just take one step too many or hold the ball longer than he had to. Iniesta is a good all arounder, but Xavi, man, I'd say currently based on skill and all around ability, he is the best midfielder in the world today. His passes are great, he never dispossesses, and when not facing a jabulani, takes good free kicks.

I'd like someone like him in the middle of the pitch paired up with a stout defensive midfielder like Melo or Schweiny with two wingers with speed and crossing ability.
