Schumacher to cut Ferrari ties at end of 2022 F1 season
Mick Schumacher's relationship with Ferrari is to conclude in December, meaning that the German will be a free agent as he searches for a 2023 Formula 1 drive.

Schumacher to cut Ferrari ties at end of 2022 F1 season

Schumacher's original Ferrari Driver Academy contract will come to what one source called a 'natural end' after this season.

Although there has been no confirmation from Haas, it's accepted in the paddock that Schumacher won't be retained by the US-owned team for a third season in 2023, with Antonio Giovinazzi currently a favourite to land the seat alongside Kevin Magnussen.

The remaining open drives on the grid include Alpine and Williams, with Schumacher's close friend Esteban Ocon backing him as a candidate for the former.

He has also been associated with an AlphaTauri seat, although Colton Herta has now emerged as a more likely candidate should a vacancy arise.

There is a possibility that Schumacher could lose out in the driver market shuffle in the coming days, potentially leaving Germany with no representative on the 2023 grid, unless Nico Hulkenberg is chosen by Alpine.

Schumacher first became associated with Ferrari at the start of 2019, when he was announced as a member of the Ferrari Driver Academy, having won the previous year's European F3 championship.

He thus joined a strong group that included Callum Ilott, Marcus Armstrong, Robert Shwartzman and Enzo Fittipaldi.

At the time, the team stressed that his father Michael's connections with Ferrari were not the driving force behind the decision to take him, and that he'd earned FDA backing on merit.

Team principal Mattia Binotto commented: "For someone like me who has known him from birth, there's no doubt that welcoming Mick into Ferrari has a special emotional meaning, but we have chosen him for his talent and the human and professional qualities that have already distinguished him despite his young age."

He was given his first F1 test in the SF90 in Bahrain in April 2019, before having a second outing for Alfa Romeo the following day.

He raced with Ferrari support for the Prema F2 team in 2019 and 2020, winning the title in his second season.

In September he gained more F1 miles with the 2018 SF71H at Fiorano ahead of what was supposed to be his first FP1 run with Alfa Romeo at the Nurburgring.

However, bad weather meant that it didn't happen. He finally had his first FP1 session with Haas in Abu Dhabi.

The Ferrari connection helped to propel him into a Haas seat in 2021, and after a frustrating season with an uncompetitive car he continued with the team this season.

An unfortunate run of accidents didn't help his progress, but he scored his first points with eighth place at Silverstone, following up with a sixth place in Austria.

Schumacher was at one time touted as a potential works driver, but support for him within the camp has waned of late.

May or may not ultimately go. I'd want to get my hands on a paddock pass (although that's stupid expensive) because based on the few experiences I was a spectator at track/race events, I found I'd rather watch the broadcast for clearer detail. Whole goal is to see cars and teams things up close and maybe take Binotto's job.

Off to Italy. Where Max will be faster and Perez can continue to prove how worthless he is even as a wingman. Bottas had more days close to LH than Perez has. More wins etc. Its over. Unless RedBull melt down completely, this season is as dominating in style as any Mercedes had.
Enough beeotching about Mercedes domination lol. Suffer the RedBull and smile!

F1 reveals other manufacturers waiting as Porsche entry doubts grow
Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali has revealed that other manufacturers are waiting in the wings to join the championship if Porsche’s plans do eventually fall through.

Porsche had been expected to join forces with Red Bull from 2026, when new engine regulations are to come into force.

The initial idea was that Porsche would take a 50 percent shareholding in the Milton Keynes-based operation and would help development of the all-new engine that Red Bull is already working on through its powertrains division.

However, it has since emerged that, as Red Bull and Porsche worked through the detail of their plans to work together, hurdles popped up in terms of what both parties were willing to accept.

From Red Bull’s perspective, it questioned whether or not it wanted to sacrifice the independence and speed-of-response abilities that had proved a mainstay of its success in F1 to get involved with a large corporate entity.

Red Bull has since made clear that if the Porsche plan is to go ahead then it would have to be entirely on its terms, which has made a shareholding partnership now appear to be off.

The only option that appears to still be open is for Porsche to get involved with Red Bull’s powertrains division, although the German car manufacturer had been clear from the off it did not just want to be an engine supplier.

The uncertainty over Porsche’s entry means F1's hopes of attracting two new manufacturers for 2026 – with Audi having already confirmed its plan – may be scuppered for now.

However, Domenicali has revealed that there are other car makers sat on the sidelines waiting for the right opportunity who have kept a deliberately low profile.

Speaking about the Porsche situation ahead of the Italian Grand Prix, Domenicali said: “I can only say that Porsche is an integral part of the group that has discussed and continues to discuss the rules behind the new power unit that will come into force in 2026.

“We have all read comments from Porsche and Red Bull, and they will be them to decide what to do.

“But I believe that we as F1 are currently a very inclusive platform. There are also other manufacturers sitting at the table of the engineers who prefer not to come out into the open."

Domenicali reckoned that F1’s 2026 regulations were super attractive to manufacturers and that the sport was robust enough to survive the ebb and flow of car makers who came in and then left.

“For our part, we are not afraid,” he said. “In the last Concorde Agreement, we asked only one year's notice to teams or manufacturers who intend to abandon Formula 1, in the past the rules were much stricter.

“This change was included because we feel strong and robust enough to move forward anyway, and there are very good backup plans.

“Today, as never in the past, we have a mix of teams, manufacturers and engine suppliers of the highest level. If something changes we know what to do.”

Albon has appendicitis - Nyck De Vries to replace him starting in Prac 3.

Ton of grid penalties from yestereday. Max is down 5 spots. Checo down 10. LH in back of the grid and Sainz to the back. Changes to PU, new PU etc.

De Vries had a nice showing in QP.

Qualifying champ Charles is back. That's it for me. It's been a good close for the weekend. See you next round.

Solution to end fan confusion over F1 grid penalties is ‘pretty simple’
Formula 1 could easily come up with a computer system to publish provisional grids that included penalties within seconds of qualifying finishing, reckons Alpine’s sporting director Alan Permane.

Solution to end fan confusion over F1 grid penalties is ‘pretty simple’

Fans and some teams were left in a state of confusion for nearly four hours after qualifying for the Italian Grand Prix when nobody was sure how the FIA would implement a spate of grid penalties and settle on the final line-up.

The uncertainty about the grid, and the length of time it took to be confirmed, prompted suggestions that a better system should be implemented – especially as the FIA regularly waits until scrutineering is complete before issuing any provisional grid.

But F1 stalwart Permane, who has worked in the sport for decades, thinks an obvious solution would be to set up a computer programme that would instantly be able to work out the penalties the second the final cars crossed the line.

For he reckoned that while some teams fully understood the penalties and how they are implemented – which changed in 2020 with drivers now locked in to their grid drops – making things clearer for fans would help everybody.

“We have guidelines from 2020, and I think the grid was formed exactly how it stated in that guideline,” explained Permane.

“That guideline has been developed, was developed with F1 and the FIA, and has been applied consistently since then. So I don’t think there’s any surprises in it. But there might have been among people who didn’t have the guideline, I guess.

“But I do agree that three and three-quarter hours is a bit long to wait for a grid. I think it would be relatively simple for them to publish it as the last car crosses the line, with the proviso it might change after scrutineering or whatever.

“They could plug all the known penalties into something, and it would be better for everybody.”
Fans look on as the grid launches for the start

Very good point - I never realized this! Desert!
EDIT: Google says that sunset is 4:31 local time on race day (race start 10:00pm) and that the average November daytime high is only 21C (70F) which is the average nightly low for Abu Dhabi in November where they complain about the track losing grip as the sun goes down during the race. That's ridiculous!

Meanwhile, returning to this season....
