Hamilton: Silverstone F1 upgrades not enough to close gap to Red Bull

Lewis Hamilton does not believe the Mercedes upgrades coming for Formula 1’s British Grand Prix will be enough to close down the gap to rival Red Bull.

After a difficult outing at the Austrian Grand Prix last weekend left Hamilton trailing Max Verstappen by 32 points in the drivers’ standings, the world champion is in no doubt about the tough situation he faces.

And while Mercedes is set to bring some developments for the Silverstone race in a bid to cut the deficit to Red Bull, Hamilton is sceptical about their impact.

“We have a little bit coming, but it’s not going to close the gap enough,” he said. “We’ve got to do some work.”

An upgrade push by Red Bull has helped the Milton Keynes-based team win the last five consecutive races, with Hamilton having not triumphed since May’s Spanish Grand Prix.

Mercedes has no doubts that Red Bull has the quickest car right now, but Hamilton is also hoping that track characteristics have also shifted things towards his rivals recently too.

“These past races have been difficult, and obviously he’s pretty much just cruising ahead,” added Hamilton.

“So, there’s not really much I can do about it.

“Of course, I’m praying for a different scenario in the next race, but if you look at their car, it’s just on rails. So we’re giving it absolutely everything.

Nice review and assessment of this race, future race in UK next and 2022 impacts for RedBull via BBC.

Notable is this - At the same time, though, there is no doubting Red Bull have made a significant step forward with their car in recent races, with developments to the floor, diffuser, front wing, nose and barge boards, and Mercedes have brought none.

Please let this be true lol

Formula 1 has reportedly scrapped the Q2 tyre rule in qualifying. That's what some observant Formula 1 followers on Reddit claim after digging into the new rulebook.

The drivers who qualify for Q3 in the qualifying session have to start on the tyres with which they drove the fastest time in Q2, according to the current rules. Many teams find this unfair, as it gives a big advantage to the teams just outside the top ten. They have a free choice of tyres for the race.

The FIA seems to be aware of this as well, as according to Reddit users the new rule is no longer in the regulations. If this rumour is true, it means that from 2022 onwards the top teams will have more opportunities to determine their strategy for the race and in this way have an advantage over the competition.

The FIA has announced that the World Motor Sport Council has approved the introduction of Pirelli’s new rear tyre construction for the rest of the 2021 Formula 1 season.

After Lance Stroll and Max Verstappen suffered high-speed tyre blowouts at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, Pirelli introduced a “more robust” rear tyre construction that was tested during practice at the Austrian Grand Prix.

Pirelli’s new rear tyres will officially debut at next weekend’s British Grand Prix at Silverstone.
