At this point, we will be starting off in downtown Ojai and driving up HWY 33. Where specifically, we need to figure out pretty soon! I will do some research, do you guys prefer a meeting place that has the basics like a coffee place or supermarket?

This will be a long drive by the way, a full tank of gas is a must.

christian370z 01-06-2011 11:56 AM

The best location to meet in Ojai is going to be at the corner of Maricopa Hwy and W Ojai Ave. (CA150). This is the Ojai Valley Shopping Center which has a Vons and plenty of parking, there is also a 76 gas station across the street.

better leave really late in the day say like after 11am, I did this the day after the snow dropped back there and snow was back there all the way down to the 3k level, most of it should be melted away, frankly what you guys plan to do is not only risky but very dangerous. If you have new tires and not bald tires should be ok.

once you get out of Ojai and head back up past the 1st crest on that section you will encounter black ice, once near the abandond biker bar there will be ice there in the morning, after that once you get near the top depending how cold it was the night before there is ice and gravel laid down right before the summit, and mostly the sun shadow areas will most likely be icy.

lockwood valley road there will me multiple muddy stream crossings and if your worried about your car this is not a place to run a cold air induction set up nor take your after market rims through.

I did this on tuesday in a mazda 3 to check the roads out and when I was done with it the mazda was not teal green any more - it was completely brown and it was about 2pm with clear skys ad it was only 30F , but there was a lot of black ice and slush left on the road.

if its a hard freeze the night before expect temps to be in the 20's in the am.
just know if there is a chain advisory speed limit back there, its only 25mph.:eekdance:

its not a 76 any more and Circle K down the road has the cheapest fuel in that part of town. just know if cops there see a bunch of shiny and loud cars driving up the road you will be followed.

XwChriswX 01-06-2011 03:52 PM

Ok so we finally set an OFFICIAL date for this thing as being on the 15th now right? I need to know for sure so I can put in for leave...

Fuck me, disregard. I'm scheduled to teach that friday... So I don't know if I'm gonna be able to make it or not.

Wow, thanks for the insight. I definitely did not get the impression the roads were in that type of condition from talking with the CHP, maybe it is wise to move this Ojai Drive back a month or two?

Regardless, lets figure out an alternative we can default to. That would leave us with Malibu as there is a ton of frost and ice up in GMR last I went. Please chime in guys, I am only throwing out places I know of.

Haha, don't worry that is still the goal! We just need to figure out a back up plan as plowing through mud and hitting frost/black ice is going to add some interesting areas into our drive, and not in a good way.

I'm open to pushing Ojai back a month or two since everyone's safety is #1

We can do something out in the Malibu area like we discussed the last time we met? Just post the time and meeting place, And we can go from their!!!

christian370z 01-06-2011 11:23 PM

Next Meet

I think it is best to postpone our epic Ojai Cruise by a month or so, no reason to risk running into ice or snow and I don't know about you guys, but I have no intentions of doing any muddy river fording! So, that leaves us with figuring out a back up plan.

The meet will be back at our traditional location in Malibu at 7am, still on the 15th of January. I have some routes in mind but we can do the cruise, have a rest stop or two, and finish in town for some lunch!

Is this okay will all of you guys?

+1

I'd hate to see anyone airlifted off the 33 because we pushed it over black ice. A shame, cause I'm getting my oil cooler tomorrow morning!

I think most of the canyons (between those that get ice, or mudslides / rockslides / potholes / runnoff) are going to stay touch and go through Feb. Anyone know of any lower elevation twisty roads in the area? Or maybe a kick *** spot for an impromptu Z show and a big group of amigos to get some grub in Santa Barbara?

If this ride is going to be canceled/postponed, please let us know ASAP. 3-day weekend means I can probably make alternate plans and get out of town on a little getaway. Yeah right, after the holidays and oil cooler purchase, I'm so broke if a mutha f*** rob me he'd just be practicin!

djamalt 01-06-2011 11:50 PM

Damn, took too long to write my last post - should probably turn off the TV. Okay so Malibu it is! How're the canyons looking out there lately Chris?

I have not personally been up there since mid december but I had a friend who went through the canyons a day or two ago and said it was clean and clear. When I get back to school this week, I will take a look myself just to be sure as I don't want any room for interpretation!

And trust me, you can still give your oil cooler a run for its money in the Bu. ;)

There are a couple options. One is 70 miles, the other is 100 miles, and the last one that Trips and I were discussing is 160 miles.

Frankly that is just as bad as shooting one in the foot and the CHP who roll back there are zero tolerance on speed, just saying if anyone where to have a serious medical issues or incident you would have to get back into rose valley / drive back down to Ojai nearest cell phone reception/ ranger station near lockwood valley rd.

Another thing is once the roads are dry, they are really not since you will have loads of grit/dust/gravel on the road from when the snow melted.

As I mentioned before if you are running any after market items and worried about snow car status this isn't the route for you, one of my drivers who has a F430 has had to repaint his Ferrari from hitting the roads back there so much, and in my daily driver my front windshield is pitted from all of the dust on the road back there. Other then that if you dont mind its a lot of cleaning you will be doing once yo finish up.

from LA to the base is 97 miles -
1st part of the route 70 miles
you will need to refuel in Frazier park
Second part is 40 miles
3rd part is 65 mils

and back to LA depending where you live its another 97 miles.

I was followed by a CHP on the way up 33 and wasn't planning to do anything stupid but a motor cycle rider coming down nearly took both of us out while going up. even with the proper equipment the med vac took about 40-min to show up.

Running an oil cooler is good but with really cold weather there are a lot of things to be careful of.

speaking of rocks, once in a while on there you will see that someone nailed a really large rock and I cant figure out why people keep driving once they have hit the rock, and down the road you can see where the car has shut off or the engine has just seized.

DO NOT SPEED on 154. there's speed traps up and down that place.

Yes sir, that is the concrete plan at this point. I hope February can be the Ojai month, I will keep tabs on the road conditions up there constantly.

KingZee 01-07-2011 09:12 PM

This works out for me too. I was actually thinking of backing out of this cause it's my friend's b-day the night before and he went all out getting a private place with open bar so I didn't wanna do this all hung over with little sleep. I might still come to Malibu if you guys aren't going out too early but knowing you guys it's probably gonna be a 6am run.

R390 01-07-2011 11:34 PM

Here are some good roads for the summer time to hit, if the winter isnt so brutal on them.

Lower sequoia national park.
Bena Rd to CA-190 W/E Poplar Ave - Google Maps

do not use 178 on the lower section - it is very narrow and lots of traffic + falling rocks and on shoulder to pull off should something go wrong. use bodfish rd off the 58 up. Last time I did this in a 07 350z I cooked the brakes coming down highway 190 from the peak, and it was brutal on the Auto box.

If this word has not been used enough "EPIC" would be one for this route.
Monroe St to US-101 S/Hwy 101 S/Redwood Hwy - Google Maps

drive up the night before on I5 get a hotel room and head out early next morning, this is a WOT blast, and I mean wide open throttle if you want to get back to the 101 while they there is daylight out. Make sure you use the car you want for this trip.

these roads are not for the novice. if you have driven all of the roads in so.cal and want something better :). :stirthepot:

this is very underrated from the maps view still very fun to do in the mid of winter.

W Bell Vista Ave to CA-190 W - Google Maps

Bristlecome pine forest - one of the oldest known pine trees
really want to get high ? seriously end of the road on the map is 13,000ft, need a permit to go past the gate to get up to the bar-croft research lab
which is 14,000+Ft above sea level

Big Pine, CA to Unknown road - Google Maps

upper sequoia national park (summer only)
Ave 334 to E Avenue 416/E El Monte Way - Google Maps

Yosemite Loop. Summer or Fall start out very early in the morning at the gate this way there is little or no traffic and US Forrest service park enforcement uses unmarked pickup trucks for traffic enforcement.

Passo Robles to Laguna Seca.
*Negative notes - GPS will not work back here or will do some really funky things.
*Access on base is permissible but vehicle must be registered and Insured.
*Do not attempt this route at night if you do you will get lost once your GPS goes silent, and its happened to me and a couple of others who have.

you will need a full tank to top off in Passo Robles and be light on the throttle, once you get too PCH you will be faced with one gas station before you get to Monterey and last i heard gas is well over $4 a gallon. :ugh2:

Paso Robles, CA to CA-68 E/Monterey Salinas Hwy - Google Maps

^Dayum! Those roads look amazing, I am sure they are stunningly beautiful! Not sure if I would drive all that way just to get to the drive but that would make for a great yearly run perhaps.

Everyone looking to attend the Malibu Meet on January 15th at 7am (meet info on the first page), please chime in so I can build an attendance list:
