Looks you guys did Latigo, nice. I usually go the opposite direction (towards PCH instead of away from it) to keep sliding down to a min. Lots of loose gravel on the right handers when heading up. In the rain, I'd imagine its even more tricky. Looks like fun though! Thanx for posting the vids.

I had planned on starting down Malibu Canyon Rd but we decided to start up Latigo, go down the Snake, up P/S/S Rds, back to Mulholland, and then to LS which becomes YB. The only good thing about going up L is that it saves those of use who have base brakes haha.

sensi09 10-27-2010 02:26 PM

My typical route which I haven't done in years it seems is latigo up, decker down, then yerba to the 101.

Used to do some runs with some porsche guys, and they liked las flores to lookout, then down piuma through mullholand, then maybe decker or yerba.

Oh btw, in the past on different forums, people would get really upset if road names were posted. It's not like they're secret, but there were some cops that use to read thorugh the forums. So they would basically know what road you would be at a certain time.

case in point they still do, there was a big Ferrari run up the coast and the Ventura county Sheriffs shut it down.

I'm all for a fun drive, the problem is the novices that tag along and showing their inexperience. It just adds fuel to the fire for the residents who go nuts and start calling the CHP or the Sheriffs.

if your going to do a drive just go for a cruse, but if your idea of going flat out with no radio communication between cars is just asking for it.

and lets not forget
the the bike riders or "tour de ghey" the cycle riders who think they are lance Armstrong, taking up an entire road lane and refuse to let you pass when they are going down hill, sadly I have seen law enforcement give drivers of motorized vehicles tickets for crossing yellows to give room to pass a cyclist.

rocks: anytime there can be rocks and if your tail to tail in a group heading up and no radio or your team mates have the radio blasting and a passenger in the car with them the results are not good.

animals: I myself have just hit about almost every type of wild animal in the Santa Monica mtn areas and if you drive these roads you will encounter one.

random driveways: yup there are some clueless people out there who will dart right out of a driveway not giving any care.

posting routes is : its just as if you were to call the CHP or Sheriffs and telling where you would be speeding and at what time. :ughdance:

The big other problem, are the crap load of Motor cycle rides who religiously position their wheels on the yellow lines and leaning over crossing the yellow lines. not only these riders are a menace, but they have also flooded the canyons with their lack of rider skills.

Im sure all of you guys, "know that your good drivers at heart" and just want to have a good time but when it comes down to explaining it to a cop and a judge, i'd rather be spending money on a vacation, track day and mabey a new set of tires.

:stirthepot:

if your going on a run pick a route - dont post it and just go for it. if it gets to big it turns into a cluster f. Organizing any run by one person bares the unlimited financial responsibility and also the forum as well, so stay away from the word "EVENT&RUN"

You have good points, including showing routes on a public forum. We do not go hog wild though, the good thing about the group we have is that everyone is well aware of the rules of the road as well as various road hazards that can present themselves in a canyon environment. Having guys who respect and acknowledge hazards go a long way, but again this validates your points.

The best one can do to avoid those motorcyclists/cyclists is to go early but obviously, there are never guarantees. Would you attend a meet one of these days? It would be nice to have someone very knowledgeable about Malibu Canyon.

That is great, it would be awesome if you could. I just made that thread title before this actually turned into an event anyways!

The next one is scheduled for the 13th of November at this point, so unless everyone chimes in a we unanimously choose another date which works for everyone, that should be the next 'cruise.'

djamalt 10-29-2010 02:17 AM

I thought I was gonna have to break out cabana wear for a minute with the new name of this thread. But well played. I like the way you all are thinking,

R3 - not a fan of the two-wheeled types eh? It's all good, on behalf of my moto-brothers out there, we still love you. But you bring up some good points about the type of drive and knowing when and where to do different types of driving. I'd imagine Ojai in the morn just after the sun gets up high enough to be out of your eyes would be Shangrilah! But I digress.

Coyote, deer, rabbits, squirrels - they all seem to have a serious lack of periphreal vision and think they own the road. So yes folks, watch out - there are plenty of them critters in the canyons. And if you happen to notice the oncoming lane is dirty in a turn, expect a biker or cyclist to take it wide and be ready to adjust. Loose gravel tends to scare the sh** out of the two-wheeled types in a blind turn and panic can set in real quick. :twocents:

How does everyone feel about a meet on the 20th of November as our next cruise? I can't make the 13th but if the 13th is better, than by all means go on without me.

fine with me

Trips 10-30-2010 12:54 AM

either date is fine

christian370z 10-30-2010 06:38 PM

So I will make the 20th of November as the date for our next cruise. Post up if you can tentatively or definately make it!

On a side note: I went out really late last night through some of the suggested roads as well as some ideas I have and there are some truely gorgeous smaller roads out there. I am feeling much more comfortable pushing the car; I would say I was at my limits as a driver but the car was at 90% so I am very happy with that.

Latigo at 1am is definately, errr, fun. :)

ncheung85 10-30-2010 06:47 PM

the 20th is ok for me as of now.

Don't have problem with most motor bike riders, just the inexperienced ones are the prob. A run isn't just getting up a 11am and throwing on some kyane west music and driving like a nut thru the canyons.

A run is all about you the road & early in the morning on a weekend. The back roads im talking about have a western open face to them, so the sunset is to bight so the early the better.

abs and large brakes wont save you from this stuff , and I don't believe rocks coming thru floor board are not covered by Nissan warranty.

I had a few somewhat close calls last night on Latigo with rocks like those, you are absolutely right about that particular danger. The good thing about this regular cruise is that 'regulars' begin to emerge and everyone learns about each other's limits which makes it safer and more enjoyable for everyone.

Any run with Vic is bound to be exciting anyway haha.

Yah this time of year with rain loosing up the mountain sides, you tend to get a lot of that. Give the city/township/whatever a few days to clean up the roads after a rain and your chances will be better of not encountering those boulders.

BTW - I thought I'd give Tuna Canyon a try yesterday morning after breakfast. The road closed signs at the entrance from Saddlepeak/Fernwood were gone so I went on down Tuna with spirits high and, D'OH! Looks like the one way section (AKA, the fun part) is still closed - and will be until December. Turning around and driving up Tuna is not only just plain wrong, it's also really really sad...

R390 11-01-2010 09:49 PM

i'd really chill out on the latigo drives, talked to a lot of people who live near there and bascially there are a lot of un-happy people who live on that road. and drives when there are Santa Ana winds should be avoided at all costs.

if at most limit the amount of cars you will be caravaning with.

problems with latigo - bottom section has not been paived for a very long time and its a rim bender, the other sections CHP would just need to be sitting up top and just waiting and watching week nights & random weekend days out there.

when there are 2 or more cars driving a canyon fairly close to each other, its up to the officer's discretion weather that is considered "illegal street racing" etc. weather you're in a "drive" etc.

good luck with the drive.

sensi09 11-02-2010 05:16 PM

^I've gone around corners to see some patrols driving through....luckily I had been taking it easy at the time.

I can't go, but you guys should aim for this weekend.....nice weather and dry roads.

christian370z 11-02-2010 06:17 PM

I can't swing this weekend, the roads will be perfect though however the good weather also brings morons out of hiding as well.
