Where to go in Los Angeles???

I will be traveling there for few days in about 4 weeks. Where is the best place to stay by the water and restaurants?

too many restaurants to recommend over a few day visit. what do you prefer?

and any particular place "by the water"? you range as far south as newport beach, to right in santa monica...
