I think you are generally better off just letting off the gas (leaving it in gear) until it gets down to < 2000 rpm in whatever gear you are in before you put it in neutral...

Ive never ran out of gas but I have had fuel starvation happen like 5 or 6 times (half of them when on the track). Funny enough I was only stranded twice and neither of those were on the track.

Totally agree. I do use SRM when I am on the track but everywhere else I manually blip the throttle. I do have a lightweight flywheel though but didn't really have problems even with the stock one.
