My friend's forester has the same problem,...

My friend's forester has the same problem, completely bone stock, header headshields. Since they were seam welded, what we decided to do was lightly tap some of the sections with a ball peen hammer...

Sounds like heat shielding to me. When it rattles like that, the heat shield is probably rattling against itself, so it might be difficult to fix, since iirc they're seam welded on.
