Maybe that's how these higher end cars are but my 2003 civic si doesn't have that and neither do the s2000's. That would be practical though if they did have them in every car model.

Well from what I have heard and read there are sensors that are basically reading where the gear shift lever is and anticipates where it will go next then blips the throttle based on the sensors...
