I really don't think there is any potential for overheating in any kind of spirited highway driving.

The overheating is most likely to occur when the speeds are lower and you're revving the crap...

Some 18"s will clear, it will depend on the wheel design. Mostly it's a matter of wheel flaring out enough to get over the front side of the caliper.
