It may smell a bit when it gets hot. It's asphalt based as opposed to butyl rubber. If you want the best bang for your buck, after you put on a layer of this, put a layer of closed cell foam on top...

Yeah, you want it as high as you can get it while still leaving a line of sight out the back for it.

A blendmount or DIY alternative where it's mounted to the rear view would be your best bet.

Looks good. Also, you'll get much better performance out of that radar detector if you mount it higher on the windshield.
