IIRC, with the kit, this light can be wired almost any way you want. The toggle switch at the center console turns the light on, it can be wired as an extra brake light without too much trouble....

Judging by that description, I'd say you probably have a bad switch, or at the very least, a dirty one. If you are using the center position of the 3 switch plate, it's pretty close to the cup holder...
