I would say most of the exhaust fumes are still going thru the exhuast and mufflers, the gap is just letting the sound out more than anything and I think that is the purpose of it.

The stock muffler is huge and chambered so having no muffler will net some gains, how much, who knows, as the chambered muffler will cause ristriction. Even if you put a striaght thru muffler on you...
