try packing it with some steel wool or something...

try packing it with some steel wool or something and see if that helps tone down the sound and it wont hurt the flow since it will be around the 90 degree pipe.

I would think that if you dont run a pipe for it then the air will just bounce around inside and you will still get some restriction from it and the flow inside would be all jumbled. But dont quote...

If you are going to gut it out I would just do a 90 degree bend pipe from each intrance to its perspective exit and cut out the walls, may be drill a few holes in the new pipes.

Im sure it is a chambered muffler and those are very restrictive but help keep the noise down.
