My decision was to not do this myself and take it to the dealer and have the lid replaced. Found a new place for the mp3 player.

Don't even ask how much it costs!!

I have the same problem except mine was self-imposed. I used sticky velcro to hold an mp3 player to the dash box. When pulling if off one time it ripped the vinyl or fake leather on the lid.
