Thanks guys!

Not my work, but found it on a photography forum. Thought it was worth a share here:

Any better hosting sites than photobucket that don't kill quality?
|
Are you using your lights as a constant source or as strobes for those shots?
|
They are speedlights

Zenfolio is another one. Cheaper than SmugMug, since SM raised their price.
|
I am starting my own photog business and was going to try a smugmug pro account, but I just need something in the time being. Since the good ones cost, I'll probably stick it out until smugmug or whatever I go with. Thanks though guys!
Cmike, will that referral work for a pro account too? I'll use it for you if I can! |

So I still have a lot to learn, but I've been playing around with night time photography and I took these last night. Using a D5100 with the stock 18-55mm lens. He problem I'm running into is that the street light next to my driveway makes a lot of the pics come out super orange/yellow colored. I'm trying to play with the white balance but not having much luck.
My street http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h9...psa413d73a.jpg I edited this after I put the pic on photobucket, but quality than the tapatalk upload :) Sent from my iPizzle using magic and new-fangled science stuff |

Here's how to set it: -Go to the location of your shoot. You'll need a gray card or at least something close to it in color (something neutral). -hold down the WB button and turn the thumb wheel until it's set to "PRE" -"PRE" will blink -point your camera at the gray and click the shutter button. It should say "Good" if done correctly. That's it. Alternatively, you can shoot in RAW and fiddle with the white balance afterwards. For night landscape type photography, I usually do this: -Set it to manual -Set White Balance (see above) -Set ISO to the lowest normal speed. I usually go with 100 or 200 the most. -Set the aperture between f/8-f/11 if you want just about everything in focus. Now all you have to worry about is the shutter speed. It's going to vary depending on how you want the scene to look. Just take a few shots until you see the one you want. Because of the ISO speed and aperture, you'll probably need to start at 1 second, then 2 second.....etc. |
Thanks cmike, I'll have to try out the gray card. I was shooting 100 ISO, 5.6f on the stock Nikon 18-55 lens, and I think 20 second exposure time. I'll post some pics later when I'm home for an example of what I'm talking about.

Here's a few that I took last night. Trying to get the hang of this night shot thing. http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h9...ps6a23419b.jpg http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h9...ps21553342.jpg http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h9...ps4c860ebd.jpg Sent from my iPizzle using magic and new-fangled science stuff |
Huck, I think Photobucket is making your pics "muddy."
|
hell yeah it is. I don't feel like paying money for the full-res version though :( How about this instead?
https://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphot...57319922_o.jpg https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphot...65779403_o.jpg https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphot...17740603_o.jpg https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphot...65421477_o.jpg |
And let me ask you guys a question. During night shots, if I'm looking through the viewfinder, the camera has no problem focusing. But after it focuses it won't shoot, and it blinks the flash symbol at me. Then without moving or anything, I'll switch to live view and it has a lot of trouble focusing. Once I get it focused (or almost, as you can see in the first pic above) it will take the pic no problems, no flash. What I resorted to doing was looking through the viewfinder, focusing, then turning off the auto focus and switching to live view to take the pics. It was kind of a pain. What am I doing wrong? For reference, I'm shooting with a D5100, stock lens, and the settings were 100 ISO, 5.6 aperture, shutter speeds between 15 and 25 seconds depending on the shot, and an auto white balance. Suggestions?

If you're in "A" or "S", the camera is basically saying it can't get a proper exposure without the flash. I'm not sure why switching to live view makes a difference though. http://www.imaging-resource.com/PROD...VFCALLOUTS.GIF You can always set the focus manually. That dot in the left hand corner indicates focus (#2). Just aim the center on focus node on the object you want to target. It will light up once the target is in focus. Metering and autofocus will not work as well in the dark, even with the high end professional gear. This is basically why it's best to go manual everything for night photography. Your results will be more predictable from shot to shot. If you look at the exposure metering bar (#11), that too may shed some light on why it's telling you to use the flash. |
Yeah, I can't figure it out. I'm in Manual for all the shots. Oh well, I'll keep playing with it.

Spring is finally arriving to Minnesota! And with it comes the waterfowl. Now that I'm done with school it will be a challenge to get the time to scout and take photos but here are some from the past two springs. Thanks for looking!
