hey Nitex- i used 45mm f/13 1meter away. my DOF was 37cm total and focused on the WildWilly's front bumper. i measured about 18cm forward and aft of the bumper so this is why the green thing with a stupid look is still barely in focus.

i wanted to ensure that the WILD DAGGER text, kare-panman (the orange/brown faced thing) and the jeeps' front tire were all in focus. :p

ken are you using an online calculator somewhere?

i downloaded a free app from droid market called DofF calculator. it's a handy tool for me cause im still not familiar how focal length plays with DOF. :)

Lol I pretty much have no clue either, I wing it:) Earlier I stated how I went out shooting yesterday and came home uninspired and empty handed. Ken, you said something like "at your level Im sure you cant just shoot anything" or something like that. I have no level, you really probably have a better grasp on photography then me at this point. I just have a good eye and usually shoot and adjust till I get it right. I wish I had a better grasp on how it all works.

Well you have natural talent then cause your picts have hell of a lot more character than mine.

I'm trying to learn the technical side first like learning the scale on a piano. Next comes Mary had a little goat (my version) :icon17:

You guys rock! I am going to have to find a dof calc myself. :)

Going to meet some Z club friends at a hydroplane regatta car show tomorrow. Taking the Sigma "bigma" 50-500. Hope to get some decent shots. My buddy that went last year said the Z show guys had the best seats in the house. Hope the weather holds out.

kenchan 08-05-2011 08:53 PM

Beach- looking forward to your shots!

I gotz the mini tripod. I luv this thing very solid! No tipping over. :p

^^ nice deep color and balance! even the pillar (yellow) matches the plate you have on the dash. do these things just come naturally to you? do you actually think through wat colors matches with wat, etc. or do you just look through the view finder and feel 'ok, looks good, snap it!' ??? :) the color and lighting of dirt, etc is perfect too.

Lol, thanks Ken. Sometimes I will try to color match but not in this instance. It was pretty much an ok this looks good, snap.

Red__Zed 08-05-2011 10:27 PM

I like the composition, but it feels underexposed.

I think a little tweaking of the shadows and it'd be perfect.

Yeah it is a tad underexposed but I was kinda lookin for a darker shadowy shot. It could be a tad more exposed tho :)

Yeah, I just feel like too much detail is lost in the shadows...but that's the tough part about dealing with real world lighting.

Alchemy 08-05-2011 10:35 PM

Which DOF app you using Ken?

Nick911sc 08-06-2011 05:56 AM

lmao you guys are crazy with your dof calculators. i dont mean it in a condiscending manner.
I just never even thought of us ing onef or how id evewn use it properly. all i do is shoot and change my aperture accordingly. back in the day they had to do way more manual calculations than we do now so i saydrop the calculator and learn dof on the fly

I'm using one called "DoF Calc" and it has 4 red dots as its icon. :)

In high luminance situations I can see via the view finder but at low lighting I cant see DOF all that well. Also in some low angle shots I have to rely on live view which at least on my camera I don't have a good reference. Thus the calculator to estimate what I'm going to be getting out of the shot, shoot about 5-6 different aperture settings and walla. :D

I'm not sitting there with a ruler or anything btw. Just eyeballing distance.

Red__Zed 08-06-2011 08:42 AM

Yeah, the d3100 is pretty hard to tell on the fly. I just snagged a calc.

kenchan 08-06-2011 03:58 PM

here's a quick shot from my mini manfrotto tripod. :D thing works like a champ.

honestly i want my shot even lower... lol so i think im going to need to tilt the camera next time. (never mind the tree reflection in the door... ill need to look out for that next time... im like didn't i learn anything from my RC picture taking...:rolleyes::rolleyes: )

Red__Zed 08-06-2011 04:42 PM

I actually mean you need to lower you car-- it's a great low shot, but those low angles make wheel gap more obvious.

they thanks for the pict comment. as far as lowering my Z..naw, im not going to lower her. she looks great the way she is and on my Z, it's about drivability, not just dressup. nissan did a great job on the suspension for street use imho! :)

my G's already lowered and she's a dressup dd. :p which i need to take pict of her too someday soon...

Thanks! Was a little tricky to set the camera horizontal on the mini tripod at first but managed. That shot is only using a UV filter as I could not see the CPL changes very well through live view. Uncropped, slight adjustment in level. :)

wilsonp 08-06-2011 09:46 PM

You may want to consider getting a hotshoe level - a three way one can be pretty handy.

Of course, for slightly more you could get a camera with a built-in level with live view ;)

Nitex 08-06-2011 09:53 PM

Went to the zoo today. Got this random shot!

i might go out take some snaps of my G later on but not sure yet. need to wash the Z first and clean up my files inside my MBP (macbook pro).
