This is the official pic from Subaru

http://img.gawkerassets.com/img/1960.../ku-xlarge.jpg

I believe the image they are pitching as "this sure looks like it" is a render and may not be 100% representative of the car.

The biggest incongruity I see is the rear fenders. The front on the new car is more aggressive than the current gen, but somehow they are taking a step back with the rear fenders?
( Click to show/hide )

So far back, in fact that it looks a lot like the current-gen Impreza.

( Click to show/hide )

We will see at the show, but I'd be surprised if that render is accurate.

I sure hope you're right man, because I was really banking on this car to blow my mind so I could hop into one in a year or two.

Firebase99 11-12-2013 09:12 AM

Those latest pics, ugh..its a Taurus.

kenchan 11-12-2013 09:41 AM

something about subaru's design. they're like saab. unique weird design.

The backend is literally from the current-gen impreza.

kenchan 11-12-2013 09:54 AM

which is as confusing as the current legacy's body design.

not sure if cool or fugly.

Cmike2780 11-12-2013 10:31 AM

What did you people expect?! It's a Subaru for Christ sake. This is a pretty good looking car for a Subaru. It's the okay looking girl in a room full of ugly.

wait...

yeah.

Gotta say I'm disappointed it turned out this far off from the concept. However, the 2.0, finally paired with a 6-speed should make this thing outstanding performance-wise, and I'd be willing to bet it will look a lot better in other colors. I've never seen a Subaru look good in red. Why they did not show the actual production car in WR blue is beyond me.

Lug 11-26-2013 09:03 AM

no hatchback = :(

Still ugly, but not as ugly. Please don't get all jealous of my mad Paint skilz.

Ugliness in motion.

ElVee 12-04-2013 12:40 PM

Take off the hood scoop, rear diffuser, and flatten the slight wheel flares...and it looks remarkably like a Senta.

However, it doesn't scream, "slight-build-kid-in-high-school" like previous models.

And the AWD performance still makes it a relevant DD. Will be interesting how aggressive the STI can look, though.

TerribleONE 12-04-2013 12:43 PM

Dont love it or hate it.. At least it has a 6 speed now

Red__Zed 12-04-2013 01:10 PM

giving the WRX the 6 speed is probably the only move they made in the right direction...

A better transmission, an engine that is (likely) more reliable than the outgoing one, an interior that is miles better than the current model, and improved handling?

I don't get all the hate. Unless the first drives of this car are abysmal, I'll likely be getting one (or an STI, depending on what they do/change).

The hate, in my opinion, is due to the huge gap between the concept and production cars' styling. One could argue that this is all just a textbook marketing fail. Everything you mention re. the improved mechanicals, interior, etc., is objectively true. But the impression a new product makes is usually highly subjective rather than objective (esp. when it comes to styling). Right or wrong, if you get everyone drooling with a concept that looks like a drop-dead sexy porn star, but subsequently reveal that the real deal is going to look more like Roseanne Barr, people are going to hate, and that hate is going to overshadow the mechanical improvements. Why? Because people will feel let down, and let's face it, nothing brings out the hate more than disappointment. They over-promised on the styling and under-delivered. Had they reversed it - have a concept that looks meh but surprise the world with production styling that exceeds the concept, perception would be night and day different. And in marketing, perception is everything. As the saying goes, perception is reality.

nuTinmuch 12-05-2013 10:22 AM

I do agree. The concept car was incredible, and this car is visually very bland. That *is* a disappointment.

I don't think it's going to really impact sales, though. I mean, Subaru has never been known for creating wonderfully styled cars (though perhaps now it's a little more infuriating because we know that they actually can).

Still disappointing that the body doesn't show more resemblance to the concept but overall performance and handling are supposedly better and I'm sure it will sell fine...and finally a proper 6-speed.

...could be worst. I kinda like the Subaru Evo better.

Chuck33079 01-08-2014 10:57 AM

It's almost perfect- you can now get an Evo without being forced to own a Mitsubishi. :rofl2:

Firebase99 01-08-2014 12:53 PM

Geezuz, is that official?? Mitsubishi is gonna sue them. Its the same car. Wow.

Meulen 01-08-2014 01:10 PM

I need to see the interior. They were light years behind Mitsu on the technology and quality there. Wish it had a hatch for my MTB's. I was looking forward to this for my DD. Not so excited now, but it does look better in other colors besides red and with better wheels on it.

Every Evo I've been in has been far, far worse inside than any of my Subies with the exception of the seats.

Are you customizing the crap out of your Subie's too!? LOL

I was at the Chicago auto show last year and sat in both to compare. The Mitsu interior has all the latest tech and and quality luxery like material with a race car type feel. The Suburu was waaaaaay behind on tech and the interior theme was more suited to hold up to my dog than look and feel luxurious. Which makes sense, because that's kinda what they are after. But it just looks like crap! :) :tiphat:

Chuck33079 01-08-2014 01:26 PM

I sold my latest one a few years back to buy the Z, so I haven't seen a new Subie interior in a while. I guess something's changed with Mitsu lately, because all the Evos I've seen were cheap plastic everywhere with a fantastic set of Recaros.

You probably don't mean the Evo just Mitsubishi in general vs Subaru in general.
Chucky summed it up........Evos I've seen were cheap plastic everywhere with a fantastic set of Recaros.

But damn that STI looks much better then the new base WRX. In a couple of years if I need a performance 4dr, the new STI would have to be on my list.

saber 01-08-2014 02:50 PM

i'd take my WRX over a mitsu any day of the week, bar the recaros. mitsus feel horrible.
