New Daily Driver has arrived....2013 FIAT Abarth

Picked him up this weekend. Quick little bugger, a ton of fun to drive. 5spd transmission is nice, and the interior is quite roomy, given the size.

Kool lookin wheels. Good luck on potholes... Throw some interior shots.

I had a hard time finding a manual to test when they first came out in the states. Tons of these in Italy as you might suspect, and all are manuals. I guess they think all Americans want an auto.

Good luck and have fun with it.

The Abarth only comes in Manual, which i really like. Though from a profit perspective, isn't the best choice for FIAT

kenchan 02-19-2013 02:08 PM

damn it. i wants one 2.

congrats!

yah, would suckarse if those came in AT. mini boxes and hatches need to be MT to be cool imho. :D

Tazicon 02-19-2013 02:10 PM

If I was going to get a 500 that would be the one. They are fairly quick little cars, fun to drive and good on gas.

Ziggyman 02-19-2013 03:32 PM

It's the Nads! :driving:

Nice. Great color choices. I considered the Abarth but the WRX won me over.

Liberty doesn't count. Only had that "truck" for 40 days.

6MT 02-19-2013 10:12 PM

Ok, you're off the hook. But I still think the Fiat is a chick.

Thanks for the interior pic. Good quality interior. Those pedals look extremely well placed. Seat bed seems like it has just the right amount of hug... But it looks like shifting may be tedious over long periods of time. Seat rides kinda high and the armrest is really small. Lots of air between driver and shifter... The positive though is the shifter is angled so it may provide relief from the awkward center design by possibly giving you positive grip on the shift.

Yea pedal placement is ideal. A couple things I don't like however, my right knee rubs up against the shifter column and gets irritated on longer rides. Also, as you mentioned, the armrest is very small and doesnt provide much support. Other than that, its a comfy ride. Suspension absorbs a lot.

The clutch is also the lightest I have ever driven. You can barely feel it, which I imagine would make it difficult for newer drivers. I have a c5 z06, and I must say, it would be easier to teach someone how to drive the z06 vs the abarth.

Thanks Econ. Now I know I'm not teh ghey for wanting one of these. I think they look like a crap load of fun.
Now all you need is that model in the Charlie Sheen commercial. :yum:

Hate to break it to you but you're a flaming ghey for wanting one. :icon18: This is right up there with the Bettle Turbo on the ghey scale.

Congratulations on the Abarth. I bought one when they first came out last year for my Wife and we both love it. Its a blast to throw around and it has a stock exhaust that just sounds great. My Wife tracked an Abarth as part of the new owners package track event you get and loved it. Enjoy!

This our 2012 Abarth, the Z and the Jag.

Cute, but like the Mini they just seem expensive for what you're getting. Then I remember how much I spent on my own little two seater :icon17:

ZCarMan - That's quite a collection you have there.

I am considering purchasing the Magnetti Marelli ECM chip for the car. Stock dyno shows 155 at the wheels, the ecm brought it to 201 at the wheels. almost a 50hp jump, and the product is made by FIAT

$800 though.

kenchan 02-20-2013 04:05 PM

at the expense of what? (other than 800)

the abarth is only about as fast as my '12 honda fit MT, so it needs more power if im going to get one. :)

Make sure you get on the FIAT forums. There are tons of folks who have had good experiences with the MM tuning box. 201 at the wheels is more than enough for an Abarth to make it fly. I tried another tuning box and wound up returning it and it remains stock.

FYI, a problem that some folks had last year when the Abarth came out was with the clamps on the intercooler hoses not being secured enough and losing boost as a result. The FIAT forums have all kinds of good info though on that stuff. Congrats and Enjoy! Also, if you get the SRT driving experience make sure you do it. Its worth it. The SRT folks put on a good event and you get to record it all and take it home at the end. Its isn't hard core track stuff, very easy (multiple events like autocross, drag, etc.) to accommodate the non-track types. Still we enjoyed the event and my Wife can now say she tracked an Abarth and drove with the SRT folks!

kenchan 02-20-2013 04:28 PM

yah, i think i saw an article about a recall or tsb or something for abarth that fixes the boost.

They did come out with an ECU fix to address a low boost problem and it worked great. One guy lost boost because of the loose intercooler clamp while accelerating onto an onramp in traffic. Almost got crushed by a Mack truck. When the boost works properly, the FIAT actually pulls hard. Driving on the interstate was a breeze and getting 31MPG in sport mode was nice.

Yeah, its funny when you look at the sport or non sport FIAT compared against the performance boost you get with the Abarth. They are two completely different cars.

I remember I was going through the drive-thru at McDonalds and the manager was an older gentleman. He looked at the Abarth and said, "So, you got the J-Lo car eh? I about spit my coffee out of my mouth at him! LOL I told him, "No, not the J-Lo car but the hot Italian chick with the black and red dress car!
