Infiniti is celebrating 3M Facebook friends and decided to drop this video on us. The light-up sequence looks striking. You have to play the video though to hear the car rev...it's definitely NOT a VQ37 in there. It could be a 3.0L turbo.

what's the french guy up to this time?

SS_Firehawk 12-28-2012 10:04 PM

Sounds like a V6 to me, with an exhaust note that sounds like a combination of the DE and VHR.

b1adesofcha0s 12-28-2012 10:13 PM

I like what I see/hear

zguynate 12-28-2012 10:38 PM

Man thats awesome! I cant wait for Jan 14th lol.

bigsix 12-29-2012 02:13 AM

yeah, the Exhaust/Engine tone sounds muffled (i.e. Turbochargers @ work) . . .

If the next gen Z is looks aggressive, is lighter than the current gen, has turbos and at least 350HP then I may trade my nismo.

I don't think Infiniti would have changed the badge to a Q50 if it was a 3.0 liter. It has always represented displacement. They would be changing years of badging tradition to name it a Q50 with a 3.0 V6. I also find it unlikely the new engine is a 5.0 V8 so what's the play here? Is the new Z going to be called the 500Z now too??? Or are they just gonna break tradition for sake of not going down in badge numbers even though they drop displacement? See if they just left the Fairlady name there wouldn't be an issue. But we Americans can't associate names with cars we need numbers haha. And Infiniti could have used the skyline name like in Europe and the GTR would still be the GTR. Then no confusion over badging when designing new engines.

Lets play detective

"Mercedes-Benz will be expanding its engine lineup with the addition of a 3.0-liter, twin-turbo V6 powerplant with at least 335 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque.

The twin-turbo V6 powerplant will join the German automaker’s current naturally aspirated 3.5-liter V6 offering, though it’s believed that the twin-turbo engine will not only offer more performance, but better fuel efficiency. The current 3.5-liter V6 features 302 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque.

It is expected that Mercedes will outfit its E-Class models, the CLS, S-Class, ML, and GL with the new twin-turbo engine while the naturally aspirated engine will be found in the C-Class coupe and SLK roadster."

Looks like this engine with 335hp and 295 tq with a little more boost would be a perfect Z engine.

Now listen to this audi twin turbo six cylinder;
Sam's V6 3.2L Audi TT with Sports Quad Tipped Exhaust. - YouTube

sounds similar to that video engine.

Adding all the clues together it's safe to say the next G/Z engine will be a 6 turbo with ~350hp ~300tq

Times change, the 50 and 60 models will no longer have a moniker thats related to displacement. 50=sedan 60=coupe.

"The current 3.5-liter V6 features 302 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque".

If this is true???? That means there's up to 250 Cheaply priced untapped hp just sitting there in the engine-bay. I hope Nissan mates proper manual and auto transmissions to something like this. If this engine is going in the Z? I believe this will be one of two engines for the Z? And I'm expecting an altima coupe(silvia substitute)variant. The Z is going to go upmarket by a large margin with the Turbo engine.

Expect some type of 4 banger turbo or NAv6 Z in the low 30k range and a turbo Z in the low to mid 40's range.

Actually you are correct, I now remember that post where they mentioned the Z will be downsizing in price/size/luxury.

I mean if they go back to the Z33 interior they could afford the benz power train, in a new chassis with ~3000lbs and 350hp I think would be a lot of fun.

redline727 12-29-2012 03:08 PM

Well whatever they end up badging it with if it indeed is going back to a twin turbo v6 and I can get it for under 40k im in. Not the G though ill wait for the Z.

LakeShow 12-29-2012 08:33 PM

Lets wait and see the official unveiling, I'm very curious of the engine.
