SEOUL, South Korea — Hyundai showed off the face-lifted 2013 Genesis Coupe to the Korean press this weekend, with the U.S. debut slated for the 2012 Detroit Auto Show in January.

The updated Genesis Coupe made its first public showing at the Korea Speed Festival 2011 in Yeongam, after Hyundai released the first official images of the car on its Facebook page.

For model year 2013, the car gets a new face that resembles the more aggressive look of the new Veloster, with redesigned grille, headlamps and bumper.

But the big news is under the hood, where Hyundai has upgraded both engine offerings.

The base engine, a turbocharged 2.0-liter direct-injection four-cylinder, now makes 275 horsepower and 275 pound-feet of torque, compared with 210 hp and 223 lb-ft for the 2012 model. The uplevel engine is a 3.8-liter direct-injection V6, which now delivers 350 hp and 295 lb-ft, compared with 306 hp and 266 lb-ft for the outgoing engine.
It look hideous, but take a look at the HP numbers they got after Direct Injection.... Nissan needs to step it up ASAP.

Looks like a Mazda.

Jamaica 11-14-2011 02:19 PM

the front end i dont like but the increase in hp is very interesting...

Could be, but until we see it on the street numbers on paper are not much.
It originally was suppose to be even with the 370z but once it hit it was always slower in 1/4, track times, etc. Can't just throw HP at it and make it better.

shadoquad 11-14-2011 02:21 PM

I think it still looks unique, and the power is great! But I hope they did something about the ride quality and cheap interior feel.

Also hoping the price stays hyper-competitive.

Red__Zed 11-14-2011 02:22 PM

More concerned with dynamics than power, hopefully they stepped it up

I hear they are just buying Mustangs and selling them as Gen Coupe. :stirthepot:

kenchan 11-14-2011 02:33 PM

wat really cracked me up was that these koreans even had the urge to use a 380GT badge on the trunk like a nissan skyline (non-GTR). :shakes head::rofl2:

It is a vd marvel. Haven't been that impressed with a car since the ap1

Spikuh 11-14-2011 04:23 PM

Much more agreesive than the current model. I like it. :D

Just last week I saw a VW Beetle that had a GT-R badge on the back. I wish I had gotten a pic of that :bowrofl:

bigdog1250 11-14-2011 10:30 PM

This is gonna be a fun car, especially with those torque figures. But I agree, not liking the facelift. Looked better before in my opinion.

The Z is unstoppable in the looks department.

m4a1mustang 11-14-2011 10:33 PM

Nice specs. I don't really mind the facelift.

Like everyone else I hope that they improve the driving dynamics. Could be a pretty stout package if they do.

Isamu 11-14-2011 10:47 PM

:barf: on the facelift

NewlyIMPORTed 11-14-2011 11:00 PM

I like it all.. I'm scared for the z at the rate they are going with the gen coupe..

it will still be heavier... like Red said, dynamics...

Cmike2780 11-15-2011 02:04 PM

I still think the Z will outpace the Gen Coupe, even with the power bump . The Nismo afterall, also has 350 hp and not that much faster than a non-Nismo Z. Granted Hyudai is claiming 295 lb-ft of torque (pretty big jump by the way) could make things interesting. The weight advantage isn't that much compared to the Z since the Gen Coupe weighs roughly 3,400 lbs.

Lug 11-15-2011 02:15 PM

If you dump the numbers in an online calculator, the Z and the Genesis come up dead even on 0-60 and 1/4 mile times. Being lighter will help the Z a bit in the handling department, all other things being equal.

0-60 and 1/4 mile times always had the Z faster, with a higher trap speed and far from dead even. Stock Z runs in the low-mid 13's with Gen Coupe in the high 13's-low 14's range. 0-60 was in the high 5's for the Gen Coupe. The closest match was the Mustang, before they came out with the 5.0. Online calculators don't take everything and you can't really go by that and I'd have to see and believe an extra 44 hp could cut a second off. We'll have to wait and see how it really runs.

TypeOne 11-15-2011 04:42 PM

I wonder if the rear quarter glasses will fall out of these like the old model did. LOL

All hating aside, it's ugly.

:-P

General rule of thumb is about .1 sec for every 10 hp in the weight range, so if the Gcoupe was .5 sec slower, this will bring it almost even, maybe just a tic slower.

370Ztune 11-15-2011 05:50 PM

It's an interesting look. Kinda sucks that the turbo version jumped so much in power; it's like a burn for the guys that bought the older car...

phelan 11-15-2011 05:55 PM

They should write to Hyundai North America and demand a retrofit. It's a sports car, it should have come with a turbo to begin with :stirthepot:

HAHA!

It did, they just got bs power to match that turbo - 210hp versus the ~270 now.

By that logic the Nismo should hit 0-60 in the mid 4's, which it doesn't to my knowledge. I do agree it will be a close race though.

bigdog1250 11-15-2011 06:49 PM

I'm excited with all these power boosts from different companies as Nissan will undoubtably up the game for the next gen Z.

Has anyone else read the insane specs on the new GT500 stang... 200mph, 650hp, 600lbs!!! WTF, the real decider will be the price. Anything around $60k would make this rocket a ridiculous deal.

Agreed. The logic falicy however is how the NISM0 added 5 to 6% more power and supposedly better tires yet gained no discernable speed increase at all, regardless of how any other car stacks up.

they will also up the price too, considerably...

maybe they will release a mid-$20K silvia/240sx again if FRS takes off.

GZ3 11-17-2011 09:46 AM

i think this car will be a direct competitor for the Z, maybe even edge it out...well see how well it responds to mods...due to the DI it should respond well. weight will be the biggest factor here. I dont see why a 350hp genesis cant edge out a 332hp Z if a 305 hp v6 stang has been doing it

Remember, the Nismo is not putting down the times "it should" due to the stiffer suspension. It's a known fact that the stiffer suspension of the Nismo hinders it's 0-60 and 1/4 mile times which is why dispite having a power increase over the standard 370z it doesn't put down any better times. The dyno clearly shows that the Nismo puts down more power, it just can't get that power down to the ground.

As others have mentioned, the Genesis will be about the dynamics of the car. It may have the power but if gearing isn't good, suspension, etc then it won't pull that much better numbers. You can drastically change a cars 0-60 and 1/4 mile times just changing the gearing and suspension while leaving the power alone. The Z in theory could be faster than it is but it's set up to handle more so than to drag race. It will depend on how the genesis has been set up.

The v6 stangs run in the high 13's low 14's in the quarter...about the same as the current gen Genesis coupe. It got a lot quicker after the last update, but its still not as quick as the Z in stock form. The Z edged over the V8 when it was making 315hp/325lb ft.

the 2011+ v6 are running about the same as the 370z on the average, there is however exceptions to both side. Its really a drivers race.

We thought that was just alcohol-fueled bigotry. Had no idea you were talking about cars. It didn't help that you were holding a shotgun and wearing a straw hat and overalls at the time. :icon17:

345 hp and 295 lb-ft! Wow! these numbers are numbers the Z34 should have had from the get go. Your move Nissan. Enough toying with the GTR. Show the Z some love Please!
