Anyone test drive the 2012 Beetle?

Just curious as you can now get the turbocharged GTI engine and a 6-speed manual in the Beetle...and at least the new design looks a hell of a lot better than the old one. I don't think a guy would have to be embarrassed to be seen in one anymore. Wondering how the performance/feel differs from the GTI hatchback, if at all.

Nismoracer 10-20-2011 05:21 PM

Uh no cuz its gay....and overpriced.

Imtired 10-20-2011 07:47 PM

Not unless they put the flower holder back in:mad:

HKYStormFront 10-20-2011 07:48 PM

why would you want to? hopefully they will succeed literally the worst vehicle ever conceived by man with one of appallingly bad levels as to match its predecessor

the_student 10-20-2011 07:55 PM

He was just wondering. I'm curious to know what people think about the new one too, driving wise. Looks wise...I have my reservations as everyone else does hahaha.

Just from seeing the info/pics on the net, and the ads on tv, it's world's better looks wise and performance/sporty interior wise from the last one. That said, that doesn't mean it's a car I'd ever spend $1 of my money on.

It's basically a MK VI GTI in a new beetle body and i happen to really like the new GTI so drivetrain wise, I think it's good, that's about it though.

Red__Zed 10-20-2011 08:12 PM

they made some neat improvements on the car for sure. I still don't really have much interest in them though.

Exactly...just wondering about the driving feel since the engines are the same. I might test drive one for grins but that's it. I test drove a GTI as couple of years ago and thought it was pretty darn good, but not worth the sticker of around 28k. While I do think the new beetle looks decent (subjective obviously), I'd never buy one. Like someone else said, VW's are overpriced and the maintenance costs a pretty penny too and since I once owned a Jetta I can also say DIY is a PITA for pretty much everything too. Also I'd say they tend to be in the lower end of the reliability scale too compared to other makes.

kenchan 10-20-2011 09:29 PM

their last turbo version was slooow.

long time ago beetle was the poorman's porsche.
latest beetle is like the poorwoman's TT. :icon17:

HKYStormFront 10-20-2011 09:36 PM

imtired, what is that avatar / game you have? do you have any idea how many hours of my life i gave to that game as a young'en? that was the greatest game ever!!!

bigsix 03-29-2012 11:23 AM

The last Beetle had a chassis that was shared w/ The Volkswagen and Audi TT. The beetle def. felt cheap inside. It drove decently for front-wheel drive + small n/a 4 cylinder.
The new one offers an inline-5 engine, still w/ modest power , i believe.

..Now hold on there a minute. I think that distinction goes to our good friends at Nissan. Can you say, CUBE? ;)

Well, they sold a crap load of them, to women that is, so who has the last laugh?

while i'm no fan of the cubical, i'm sure it's 10x better as a vehicle than the abortion that was the "New Beetle"

Sibze 03-29-2012 02:55 PM

I see all those ugly cars and raise you with:

HKYStormFront 03-29-2012 02:56 PM

yea seriously^ probably in the top 3 most ugly/awkward/repulsive vehicles ever made. i'm still not sure how they sold other than their sheer utility but there were plenty of other vehicles out there in a similar category

That's too nice of a picture. This orange one has the painted bumpers and flares. That's only a -10 on the 0 to 10 scale. To go all the way to -11 you need the plastic showing fenders and flares like on this yellow one. ;)

You are also forgetting the Chevy Chevette. They sold a tons of those too, and oh my, what a POS that thing was. No way the new beetle is/was worse than that thing. I'm sure there are plenty of others too.

the "New Beetle" has more recalls than some manufactures have for their entire lineup of cars. granted that doesn't necessarily mean it's the most unreliable car but it's an indicator of shoddy engineering. i worked at a VW dealership and trust me, they are by FAR the worst cars on the road. vette's are known for the problems too but it's no where close to beetles.

I got a 2013 2.5L model because I didn't want to drive my camaro to work. it's very quiet and comfortable, a good DD and the insurance premium is very low. Women still like it :)

Sure does look like a TT.

mick 02-28-2013 07:29 PM

I am surprised how big it is. It looks wider than the 2SS Camaro in this pic. I don't think it really is, but it's definitely much bigger than the last Beetle.

ajc1884 03-01-2013 07:18 AM

The question is......can it beat our Z's in a race?

no way. the Z seems faster to speeds than even my 2SS.
the only things the Beetle does better is it rides softer, is quieter, and gets better gas mileage :)

There's something about a German car that's shaped like a Nazi helmet that's not very appealing. :ugh:
