Lurker here...

I'm not at all being demeaning here, but how many of you have driven a 911 being driven hard? I'm genuinely curious. I have no experience even sitting in a 370z so I can't make a great comparison. However, this past weekend I had about 15 minutes in a 997 Carrera S being driven by a track instructor, on a track. Again, I can't compare it to the performance of a 370, but my goodness the 911 was unbelievable. I should mention that it was a stock car (except brakes, I think) on stock tires.

Curious if anyone else has experience in a 370 (duh) and a newer 911 at the limit?

You will get another cool car, and a better job. Good luck man.

Last summer I got to drive the hell out of c4 convertible, was from 2003 I believe. Was a blast to drive, the girl I was seeing let me "borrow" it for the weekend, was her mom's. I drove it like I stole it, was the only stick shift porsche I drove around... I had an 06 g35 coupe back then, which drove like a slug in comparison. Funny thing is, I'm pretty sure they put down similar power. (315 hp vs 296). I loved my G, but the feeling of cruising in that Porsche was just awesome. Took it out by the beach here on Long Island, drove it for hours... I def wouldn't mind having one!

Other Porsche's I've driven are 93 c2 convertible, and a very old one (1980 911 SC targa). I didn't get to have nearly as much fun with those as the other other car I mentioned.

Porsche is much much better engineered car. The new 991 Carrera S is lighter than previous model. It iwas as fast as 997 GT3 around nurburgring. That's with a smaller motor!

The GTR is a much bigger car and while it may have better acceleration the 991 is much more agile car. Tough to compare the two. 991 is way more car than the Z could ever hope to be.

Porsche prices reflect limited production model. they charge what they can to make set number of cars. They aren't interested in being cost competitive. They still offer very compelling car that is in demand. It's not just the name. If I could justify $100k for a car 991 would be on my shopping list.

Interesting thing is Porsche makes all that performance without large displacement or blowers. It does it with litte 3.4 and 3.6 liter motors that I'm sure results in great mpg.

That Porsche 3.6 in the 991 CS is smaller than our Z motor and makes 50 more hp than a Nismo with a 3.7. the Porsche also loses a lot less power in their drive trains than our Z's. You'd have to make 425 hp to match Porsche 400 hp. And don't even start on rear traction advantage Porsche has. Then look at porsche PDK tranny it's way cool. Porsche is all about efficient design. I haven't seen weight for 991 but it's supposed to be 100 lbs less than outgoing 997.

Carrera = 3.4L that puts out 350 hp / 288 ft lbs torque for $83,000

Say what?!

Why the hell wouldn't you...
1. Buy a GTR for that $$$ or...
2. Buy a Z, put about 10K into it and go faster around the track and look better?

WTF?

The Carrera S model puts out 400 hp but now we're dangerously close to 100k with a price tag of $97,000 and change. Arguably my Z is close to that power (depending on what dyno is used ;)) and I'm not even force inducted yet.

So you're telling me that some corporate exec boring douche really (that OBVIOUSLY has money) wants to drive that boring car?? With those measly specs??

What gives here? I mean even if the GTR isn't your cup of tea, there are more interesting cars in that price range with undoubtedly better specs as far as power goes. :ugh2:

PS: the interior is nice yes... but not $50,000 nicer than the Z touring. Really Porsche?

Why would someone pay 100k for a porsche when cheaper nissans can go just as fast? Well, for the same reason someone spends 20k on a Breitling watch when a $50 casio from wal mart can tell the time just as good. Some people want elite brands and the prestige that comes with it.

I've got a lot of watches (some pretty pricey) and you know what I wear all the time? My G-Shock. And it'll outlast all of 'em. ;)

It's funny how people have such strong opinions about cars that they have never driven before.

You know what they say about opinions! :icon17:

Mt Tam I am 10-14-2011 10:33 AM

For $100K I can see a 911 but it is the Z06 Carbon that beckons me. Every day it dances through my mind.

I can just go buy it, keep the Z or not, but I'd need to work longer before retirement. Not my favorite thought.

I will just go with my current slogan. "If I had the better car too, it just wouldn't be fair." :icon17:

Cmike2780 10-14-2011 11:02 AM

If I had the means, I'd buy it for the simple reason that it's a Porsche.... Heck, I'd probably have a Z and GT-R in the stable if money really wasn't an issue. Picking one over the other is kind of like choosing which supermodel I'd rather want to see naked tonight.....

all of them :)
