Porsche 911 - Highly Overrated?
 

Now don't get me wrong. I've always loved the 911. But twice now in the past month, I've been challenged by 2 different (2010-2011) 911's and both times left their owners completely humiliated. On both twisties and straights. :owned:

Maybe both owners were just The Suck. Although on a straightaway, at least, I fully expected to lose to the alleged mid-range power of the Porsche. It was just the opposite. My car has some mods, but a catback, intakes and HFC's should not = 911.

Anyway, I just had to smile that a $35K car could accomplish this. Not that I'm advocating street racing. I would never advocate that.

More than likely those guys didn't know how to drive. The Z is a fantastic cheap machine but I don't see it owning the 911 the way you described.

I raced a 997 4S once and was pulling on it in a car similar in performance to your Z.

Then I found out she (yes she :P) had it in 5th gear, lol. They are geared so closely that many drivers will just throw it back into 5th from a highway punch and pull away from most cars. By the time they figured it wasn't working, they decided just to wind it out anyhow. I've done that before.

Apparently to the politicians, there are only two types in this country. There is the people that are on welfare according to the repubs. There are the people that are f - u rich according to the demos. I am going to round up and say the percentage is 20%/10% for the welfare and rich dudes. Where did the rest of the 70% go.....

had to be a base model with a crappy driver. even the CarreraS and 4S are stupid fast... guess it depends on what year too. porsches are amazing vehicles and (thankfully) leaps and bounds from where they were 10 years ago both in vehicle dynamics and especially interior. still to this day, two of my "best car i've ever driven" test drives were of porsches, one a cayman S and the other a 997 GT3. both of these cars are life changers

A 997 4S in 5th gear from a highway roll is about equal to a 370Z going all-out.

Which is cheaper to insure/maintain/operate? I'd probably take the 911 but sell it quicker. I bought a Z cuz I could afford one.

Oil changes aren't that bad, and warranty is warranty. If it had CCB's, it would not need brakes done for quite a while.

Oil changes are hella expensive, but there are far less of them. And true that on Ceramic Brakes. However, if anything breaks that is not covered by warranty, whoa nelly.

And if you're planning to track, it may be too much. A local guy sold his 911 for that reason. The Z's not as fast, but it's relatively cheaper to maintain for track thrashing.

Any parts coming from Europe are hella expensive. Anything. The $ to € conversion is a killer - parts for my Benz make me weep. It's the reason I went back to Japanese.

How often would you drive the 911? I wouldn't DD it. Oil changes on my car are $130 a piece. I would imagine the 911 is between 2 and 400, and includes a full going over by trained techs. If you can afford a $85K+ car, $200-400 on an oil change isn't the end of the world. It's more like 4-6 tanks of gas. Now when you consider that 3K mile oil changes are a thing of the past (My current DIC read-out estimates for my car that the next change is due at 16K miles based on driving conditions, etc. It has 3500 on it now.)

Basically, oil-changes happen once a year unless tracked. $500 a year price to play? Cheap.

Tracking a P-car, though, I agree with is expensive. Tracking ANY $85K+ car is expensive. If it weren't, a lot more of us would do it. Kindof like being in shape. It takes WORK, or everyone would have a 6-pack set of abs and squat 500+

IC, I agree. I said Porsche oil changes are expensive, but far less frequent. Basically the same thing. It seems like a lot to pay for one, but when you're only getting one instead of 4-5 annually, it's not bad.

Yep. Now tracking the car would definitely be expensive compared to tracking a 370Z.
