Which Sporty Beater?
 

Ok, I've been mulling it over, and when my current DD dies, I'm thinking of buying a hot hatch.

Out of these three, which would you recommend and why?

Candidate A: The Mazdaspeed3 - Torque without end, crummy mileage, ugly car, but so much fun to drive and spacious...



Candidate B: The VW GTI (or the rumored more powerful variants) - Beautiful and fuel efficient, fun to drive, lacks power, German maintenance costs



Candidate C: The Ford Focus ST - supposed to be powerful, has sync to mess around with, but is a Ford.

I like the VDub for performance, although I'm very happy with my CRZ. Its no hot hatch, just looks great and gets good mileage.

My coworker Remy has a CRZ. They look good, get great mileage, and he says it's fun because he can row his own gears in it. But I have a labrador, so i kinda need a four-door.

I like the speed3 as well.

I say screw all of those, and go Subie ftw.

Basic WRX is sporty and has hatch option or sedan. AWD for winter, looks better, blue can't be beat. And it's still JDM. :tup: (like that matters lol)

That's not bad. I think FWD is ok for winter, though. I've driven through all sorts of nasty snow in my Mazda 6. Wouldn't dream of it in the Z. But FWD is ok in snow as well.

True. my tC was just fine in the snow. But still, Subie > All Listed imo.

I've heard (but don't really know) the wrx and the z make good stablemates.... Again, just hearsay.


Of those options, I'd go speed3. They're a blast. Almost bought one instead of the z.


Do remember that sporty fwd in the snow is not the same as lame fwd in the snow :rofl2:

I vote for the Focus ST. I'm actually thinking about one as well.

Focus ST had my attention for a while, but I can't get rid of an AWD car anymore. I need at least one lol

I'd take the Ford. A DD is about affordability and durability imo. Otherwise you would just DD your fun car.

I like to dd a second fun car, but I am kinda weird I guess.

I'm the same way. DDing a boring car would suck.

i've been eyeing the ST for quite awhile now, ecoboosted 4 banger, yep. You know that thing will make stupid power with some tuning.

Not a fan of the reliability or weight of the V-Dubs.

It's basically an American (Australian?) BMW M5 from a couple years ago without the maintenance and a lot cheaper to upgrade. They are awesome cars for a DD. Only SLIGHTLY slower than the new Camaro SS's, and pretty decent inside.

I too say Impreza >> Speed3 > the others

Yeah, they're cool cars, but I'm not looking for RWD, and they're a big bulky sedan. I'm looking for more lightweight solutions.

Shado wants a G20 or WS6.

You can get the G8 GXP in a 6 speed. But $$$ as it as the Corvette engine lol

WRX minimally. If I happen upon a lump of money somehow, the sti becomes a possibility.
