Also a side note, the rear view mirror was just laying in the floor when I started. Used a repair kit and is now back on.

bigaudiofanat 08-22-2010 04:36 PM

LOL ya it is

The oil is drained but for the life of me I can not find the oil filter location.

Tronchaser 08-22-2010 05:09 PM

Great job big... Looks like it's gonna be a great little car!

Jamaica 08-22-2010 05:26 PM

Looks in good condition so far. Keep it up

Zaggeron 08-22-2010 05:57 PM

Shaping up as a sweet little ride! Is a conversion to RWD on the agenda? ;).

bigaudiofanat 08-22-2010 06:15 PM

Who knows I am not sure what that all involves but it would make it even more fun in the corners.

bigaudiofanat 08-22-2010 06:22 PM

Well finally got the oil changed, and that radiator fluid is actually after being drained and putting in flush. After draining that I ran water through and than put fresh radiator fluid in. I also recharged the A/C today, I think I got it charged pretty well for the first time doing it.
http://i483.photobucket.com/albums/r...c/7eb5abe0.jpg

Also cleaned up the engine bay a bit.

ChrisSlicks 08-22-2010 06:28 PM

Looking good!

If it is still running rough cold check for vacuum leaks and stuck PVC valve. Other than that the ECU may not be detecting it as a cold start and giving it enough fuel.

bigaudiofanat 08-22-2010 06:30 PM

Ya when we drove it up on the ramps it started right up and after the fluids were changed it started right up so I think it is finally knowing where it needs to be. I am going to check the pvc valve anyway.

AK370Z 08-24-2010 10:26 PM

wow.. holy sh*t! this car is coming along great! Heck my exhaust system costs 4 times this car  . Dude, next time I'm in your area, we can so drive with the tops down!

Good luck with the project.

bigaudiofanat 08-24-2010 10:45 PM

So when is that valve cover coming off to be painted? It's struggling.

bigaudiofanat 08-28-2010 09:59 AM

I do not know if I will. This winter the engine is coming out for a new one but if it does not, it will come off this fall.

A leak was found late yesterday, going to need a new water pump.

bigaudiofanat 08-28-2010 01:56 PM

Good news and bad news day:

Well got a package of free goodies today. 2 sets of polk audio db speakers.

I installed the rear set and will work on the front at a later time. "To bummed out about the bad news. If anyone is wondering why I installed rear speakers I did it for a few reasons.
1. I have rear seats.
2. It is a convertible so a little extra sound can not hurt when the top is down.
3. The rears will be faded out when the top is up.

Bad news:
I started the car to let it run some when I noticed a faint smell from the exhaust. I reved the engine and looked back. WHITE SMOKE, so I think I have a head gasket blown or just worn out from sitting. So when I replace that I will replace the water pump as well. Hope to get this done next week in time for the meet. Not sure if I am going to be able to. I am getting the repair manual for the car and going to see what it involves to replace both. If it is to much or I feel that I may harm my engine. I will talk to my gf's grandfather for help if he does not want to help than to a reapir shop it goes. I have confidence I can do it myself but have to take my time.

bigaudiofanat 08-28-2010 04:21 PM

I did however go back out and paint the windshield wiper holders.
I do not want to start tearing apart the engine or anything until I have the repair book and the parts.

You friends with the original owner? If so, he/she's gotta be PISSED they got rid of that thing for chump change!

bigaudiofanat 09-04-2010 11:24 PM

No he was the second owner. He just had it sitting there.

bigaudiofanat 03-01-2011 07:15 PM

Well leaks fixed, car running, all that is left to do is insure it and drive.

Going on the road the 12th

Zaggeron 03-01-2011 07:32 PM

Congrats. Any updated pictures on the final status of the car?

bigaudiofanat 03-01-2011 07:38 PM

Pretty much the same as it was in the fall. Will have new pictures in some time after getting it out of the driveway.

bigaudiofanat 03-11-2011 12:11 PM

New plates are in my honda, insurance is on the merc as well. Just waiting for the work day to end and tag her up for some test driving. Should be fun.

GZ3 03-11-2011 04:41 PM

updates and pics would be cool

bigaudiofanat 03-11-2011 09:35 PM

Tonight in my driveway
http://i483.photobucket.com/albums/r...r/IMAG0399.jpg

From todays drive of 50 miles I have recorded the fallowing. Ideal has smoothed out tremendously from what it was. Brakes need to be bled or replaced. Air bag light indicated thermo fuse needs to be replaced. 1st gear to second is rough.

Other than those it drives well.More pictures tomorrow.

Zaggeron 03-11-2011 09:44 PM

Warn enough yet for the top down?

ZeeingAround 03-11-2011 09:47 PM

Flip it and make some money.

Not sure I can do that right now, I am enjoying it to much. :driving:

ProfessorDave 03-13-2011 06:59 AM

I just came across this thread. What a great project! Such an unusual car (I don't remember ever seeing a ragtop Capri), and you are doing a great job with it. In for updates!

Vegitto-kun 03-13-2011 03:00 PM

sometimes I think I should buy a piece of "junk" and work on it and learn more about how cars work.

bigaudiofanat 03-13-2011 05:31 PM

UPDATE!

Everything today was fine up until I left from getting a snack. Left there and heard a BANG under the hood looking in my rear view to see a chunk of belt flying away. Looked down at my gauges to see my battery light on.

I was on my way to my Girlfriends so it made it ok.

After going out in her car and coming back I left and headed home. Cautiously watching my voltage gauge going down. A second BANG along with radiator fluid appeared when I was halfway home.

The explosion this time was the radiator itself which blew out a piece of itself. I had to make it home though so after checking it I set off. Driving at 50mph I made it home with steam coming out of the hood.

So now I have a belt already for the alternator however I do not have the 120 bucks for a new radiator and thermostat. That will have to wait at least a week until I have a install this coming weekend.

Zaggeron 03-13-2011 05:47 PM

Eventually ... piece by piece ... you'll have a brand new car :)

:driving:

ChrisSlicks 03-13-2011 06:11 PM

Sounds like that alternator belt also drove your water pump. Definitely can't drive for more than about 30 seconds without a water pump.

DING DING DING we have a winner!

After looking at the maintenance manual for the capri the alternator and water pump are both on the same belt.

ProfessorDave 03-13-2011 08:01 PM

Hope you didn't warp the head.

Damn Mercury exploding radiators!
