I had the 93 rx7 up intil 6 years ago. I can say this much. If mazda goes back to that formula. TT, and the stated 270hp with torque fitting of that horsepower. (Say. 240lbs.) Also if they keep the weight in 3,000 lbs or less. It will be a serious threat to the Z. As it was in 93-96. That rx was a threat to V8's when modded.
Some think saftey regs will keep it heavy. Technology is moving forward. Companies like mazda and toyota are really dedicated to weight reduction moreso than nissan. Toyota said this. If they do produce the FT 86. They can keep it in its weight range and not change the way it looks as the concept. The concept weight is 2866lbs. The concept hp is apprx 220hp 4 banger.
From mazdas history of making lightweight extremely well balanced (true 50/50 weight dist sports cars) I think mazda can achieve this feat. One thing you have tyo remember with rotories. The engines are fairly small, which makes them lighter. What they don't have in size they make up in revs. Fully tuned rotaries may hit 10,000rrpms.
93-96 was the most amazing stock engine of the era. (Though it sucked gas like crazy and drank quarts of oil like humans need water.) But the power, balance, and overall characteristic was like no other car in the price range. The Z of the same era was heavier and not as balanced. (Though the Z was marginally quicker stock)
The only way the new mazda will be a fail is... if they keep the tradition of the renesis and not follow the. Last gen rx7

Either way its a topic on forum and I'm not the moderator so take up where it should be with one of them.

Either way, the mazda is a car worthy talking about imho. Its nissans true direct competitor and deserves respect. The RX7 was a honda/nissan/toyota owners worst track nightmare in the 90's. Held the world land speed record while the motor was modded and the body was still mostly stock. People have short memories to stuff like this. I want the rx7 back as a
Competitor. The rx8 was crap next to the last gen rx7.

Well I hope mazda brings back the rx-7. I saw some more drawing of it and I didn't like it all that much, except for the front. I hope they improve on the looks. I also read that they might make it a turbo. I read that they are working on a forced inductions for it.

ive seen 300k rx7s before. but most dont make it that far cuz they get modded and nos'd and just totally destroyed by the F&F crowd.

If those stats are correct that would be a damn fun car to drive. Handling would be mind blowing. Hopefully Mazda can keep with it and keep the car light, its time cars start shedding major lbs...

I'm a fan boy of the RX-7, had about 5 of them including a Turbo II. Wonder the price and if the engine is going to be improved especially those APEX seals and heat issues.

Plus the price for the performance. Don't look to bad in the pics.

That one is the Touring with the Sport Package and special paint. If you get a scratch the whole car has to be painted and tow to a secret place that only Mazda knows..

I'd imagine a 3-rotor motor would be good, but I doubt they'd ever do that again. I don't know anything about the 16x, but I'm going to assume it's 2 rotors.

I'd like to see a rotary miata, to be honest. Smaller more powerful motor in that car would be sweet.

I am so with you on a rotary-powered Miata

Those pics are of the upcoming RX-9 which is supposed to be the RX-8's replacement. I have yet to see a photo of the RX-7 other than the concept pics, which look amazing. Don't think I like the RX-9 too much, I still prefer the RX-8 styling.
