My limited knowledge from previous readings...stay away from SMG cars, they aren't very attractive even within the BMW enthusiasts circle. Vanos can be a problem. I believe those M cars have some special maintenance schedule (other than the normal fluid change), called Inspection 1, 2, etc...make sure those are done. Shock towers reinforcements may be needed in some older cars if I recall correctly, they can mushroom. Enthusiast Auto Group, known as EAG, buys and sells the best examples at a huge premium, just fyi. Among US spec E46, Competition Pkg cars are most desirable (closest thing we can have compared to Euro spec E46 CSL) I've never had one. Sure it's a great car. There's a saying though....there's nothing more expensive than a cheap BMW. Don't pick the bottom of the litter. Buy one with religious maintenance record.
