LA MARQUE, Texas - A $2 million car is nearly destroyed in an accident in La Marque, where a driver says he drove his Bugatti Veyron into a lake after a bird flew in front of him.

The accident happened Wednesday afternoon in Galveston County.

La Marque police say the French-built supercar ended up in a lagoon, coming to rest in about 2 feet of saltwater.

Police say the driver, whose name was not immediately released, was not injured in the crash.

Police say the man, from Lufkin, had been looking at real estate in the Galveston area when he was distracted by a low-flying pelican near Omega Bay.

A tow truck was summoned to extract the rare production vehicle from the muddy pond.

A 2006 Bugatti Veyron was recently offered for sale in Jonesboro, Ark., for $1.25 million. Other vehicles of the same make have sold for up to $2 million.

LA MARQUE — The owner of one of the world’s fastest production automobiles accidentally drove his fine-tuned, French-built car into a saltwater lagoon Wednesday.

The man, who police said was from Lufkin, was uninjured after escaping the partially submerged Bugatti Veyron as it came to rest in about 2 feet of saltwater.

The two-seater, with 16 cylinders and four turbo chargers, can reach speeds of more than 250 mph. New models sell for about $2 million.

The man, who refused to give his name, was looking at real estate in Galveston.

About 3 p.m. a low-flying pelican distracted him as he traveled north on Interstate 45 just south of the hurricane levee near Omega Bay.

The man jerked the wheel, dropped his cell phone, and the car’s front tire left the frontage road and entered a muddy patch, which foiled his attempt to maneuver away from the lagoon.

The Veyron’s powerful engine gurgled like an outboard motor for about 15 minutes before it died.

Police and firefighters blocked the frontage road until MCH Towing employee Gilbert Harrison carefully wenched the car away from riprap and onto the soft, muddy bank.

It’s the rarest car in the world, not something you can just replace, the man said.

An Associated Press story in October mentioned a 2006 model Veyron for sale in Jonesboro, Ark., with an asking price of $1.25 million.

One of the prospective buyers was from Texas.

That Bugatti Veyron was one of only 200 made and one of only about 15 in the United States, the AP reported.

Musta been goin pretty fast, or had to make an emergency swerve...

IMO Screw the bird, its a hell of alot easier to wipe off bird guts vs re upholstering the interior... :ugh2:

...it's Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds, I tell ya!

bigaudiofanat 11-12-2009 12:14 PM

So that is literally the second veyron in 5 weeks that has been destroyed. The other one the guy took it for a joy ride and smashed it. Man this is sad.

semtex 11-12-2009 12:18 PM

^ Unless the guy turns out to be a big banking exec or something (think Goldman Sachs), then not so sad. ;)

TX_370 11-12-2009 12:21 PM

I do not feel bad for the guy, but for the car I have shed many tears... :crying:

True I mean only 15 in the state well now 14 or 13 depending on if he can repair it.

The man jerked the wheel, dropped his cell phone----
I have no sympathy what so ever!

semtex 11-12-2009 12:25 PM

Yeah I know, I meant that tongue in cheek. Regardless of who the owner is, it's always sad to see a nice car destroyed, especially a rare one like this.

bigaudiofanat 11-12-2009 01:02 PM

I agree, if someone showed up at my house tomorrow and let me take something like a Ferrari F430 out; I would leave the cell phone home.

Wonder if they are just collecting Insurance payouts?

MeetJoeAsian 11-12-2009 01:43 PM

iceman21_23 11-12-2009 06:20 PM

Yep and why in the world would he do that? :owned:

MeetJoeAsian 11-12-2009 09:01 PM

funny how every article I've read says the car has 16 valves...16 valves, if at 4 vales per cylinder, implies this car is only a 4 cylinder....and the car is not even a V16, it's a W16....

MeetJoeAsian 11-12-2009 09:04 PM

here's the picture of the guy and the car a day before they went swimming

Ya, and he blamed it on a pelican! LMAO! You know, you just KNOW that dumbazz was dialing a number on his cell phone, not looking at the road, and simply drove off into the marsh. You'd think the moron could have afforded a hands-free cell phone. Ah, well. Schitt happened.

CrownR426 11-14-2009 08:59 AM

LOL!
"I'm pretty sure that's a lambo"
"OH SHITTTT, OH SHITTTT!"
Priceless...:bowrofl:

theDreamer 11-14-2009 09:36 AM

Some background on the guy:
~He owns a exotic/supercar repair shop, basically fixes up these cars and sells them
~The Bugatti was his own, not a company car
~From the video it looks like he got distracted and just slowly went off the road
~A side note, that Ferrari Enzo that Eddie Griffin crashed was also owned by this guy

In that area, speed limit is probably no more than 55MPH on that road.

Kones 11-16-2009 12:50 AM

I call bull*** There just happens to be video of this happening, randomly. The guy just happens to restore exotic cars that have been damaged . . .

I'd rather watch balloon boy . . .
