I'd personally go with the "let's relax on the speeding instead of searching for a radar detector at least until you get through this mildly serious traffic ticket".

i wasnt trying to encourage him, but it just doesnt seem likely that someone who goes over the limit that excessively will be able to tone it down lol

He didn't cut you no slack!

However, here in the Republic of Virginia anything over 80 mph is reckless driving.

1st - Get a GOOD Lawyer
2nd - Do a Driving School
3rd - Slow Down!

1 95mph ticket $500, + 5 point, + Higher insurance premiums, + $250 per year for 3 years in NJ state insurance surcharges.

1 $500 dollar radar detector and none of the above costs = priceless!

Last October I got pulled over for going 96mph in a 65mph. I live in Maryland and was also pulled over here in Maryland. I decided to pay the $290 ticket and not deal with having a judge laugh in my face for asking for forgiveness of a 30+mph over ticket. I wound up getting an automatic 5 points and had to take a "driver improvement" course (basically just the same written test I took when I got my drivers license 13 years ago, which I aced BTW).

All-in-all I wound up paying a total of $355 ($290 ticket + $15 online test + $50 for in-person test). I've paid two insurance statements since my ticket and my rates have NOT gone up. My points will be wiped off come Oct. 2012 if I behave. I know every state is different, but just wanted share my experience in hopes that it will help your decision making. Since yours was 40+ over and in a different state, the laws may (and probably will) apply differently to you.

I provide my experience as evidence that insurance premiums will not ALWAYS go up like everyone says (although most of the time they probably do). Maybe they (State Farm) just like me since I've been a good customer of theirs since I started driving. In the meantime, be cautious and drive safe. My experience has definately calmed my fast driving habits down quite a bit.

And all this because I decided to pass some slow poke doing 10mph under in the left lane of I-95. I've diligently been working on my patience with ppl driving under the speed limit.:driving:
