I already read on this forum the plenty of gas cap related issues this car has been having....but this is just plain stupid now.

To top things off, appearantly the dealership was suppose to send the bill of sale to Geico and they obviously didnt. So now I am getting threats of collision and comprehensive loss if I dont have my vehicle photos taken by Geico.

When I was with Volkswagen, granted their cars aren't really fast cars....But they sure take care of their customers like gold. Never once had a check engine light on my 2007 VW Rabbit that I sold at 50,000 miles. This 30 something thousand dollar car ends up with a check engine light at 632 miles..... I cant curse on this forum....But im sure you understand how frustrating this is and inconvenient during the work week.

Sorry to hear but things happen for a reason, and not every car made (though same model) is ever built exactly identical.

See what the dealer says and take it from there. Good luck.

Just out of curiousity, did you tighten the cap properly? or did you accidently leave it loose?

It's really not that big of a deal and an easy fix. Pick up and OBD reader or drop by an Autozone and they can reset the code in less than a minute. If it comes back and the cap is secured properly, have the dealer replace it. It's such a cheap fix, they won't give you a hard time. Just remember that this forum is just a small percentage of Z owners and the gas cap "issues" are not as common as you think.

Also, remember to line up the notches on the cap before turning so you don't mess up the rubber gasket.

The insurance thing is really your reponsibility, I had to do the same thing. Your agent should have a list of places that does the inspection and takes all of 10-15 minutes. You could also send your agent a copy of the bill of sale and that should be sufficient. The only reason I couldn't do that was because I misplaced the bill of sale.

Relax & Good luck with the fix.

So what was the fault code that turned the service light on?

I just got the car back 2 hours ago. Code found was P0456 Evap leak

The receipt the service center gave me reads "P0456 Evap very small leak stored, tech performed evap system leak test for 6 minutes and pressure did not drop. No evap leak found, tech erased DTC and rechecked vehicle on roadtest and no SEL returned."

They said to be more careful with my gas cap....Even though I close it and click it 3 times.....But OK! I guess its my fault.

What do you guys think?

If you don't want the light to come on any more, i'd be sure to tighten the crap out of the cap....

I had the service engine light problem twice. It was checked by the dealer and they reported the same code as above ...a small evap leak. This may not be the real long term solution... but I started pushing the gas cap in very, very firmly while turning and making it click several times. It has not popped a code since.

stupid gas cap. our new expedition doesn't even have a gas cap, all cars should be like it. you just stick your nozzle in and pump, then remove it. don't know how it doesn't leak.

yup it was just the gas cap, happens more often than you might know. when i worked at the dealership we had at least one or two a week come in for gas cap leaks. sometimes it was because the owner didn't tighten them enough, other times because the seal in them went bad (frequently with GM's). yea just tighten the crap out of the cap and it shouldn't be an issue. i usually "click" mine for a good half turn or so

Every time it clicks isn't it just resetting? It's not getting any tighter is it?

theoretically yes, but honestly, it's good to let it click about 5 times or so each time you tighten it down, just to make sure

It like a torque wrench. It gets tighter, but not by much.

This problem isn't unique to the 370z, my 07 Civic SI will do the exact same thing if it isn't clicked at least 3 times.

I had the same problem and reset the code on the first SEL myself, then it returned within a week! After taking it to the dealer the second time and going over it with my buddy that works there, who did the same evap test. He came back and said it looked like I was over tightening the cap and eventually I f*cked up the rubber gasket in the cap! I admit I tend to make it click a lot, I don't count it but it's a good amount of clicks. In the end he ordered me a new gas cap and I have not had the problem since!
