Help: Oil changes!!!!

Does it make a big difference performance wise what oil you use when you get it changed at a dealership? I normally get the the full synthetic, but my friend gets the regular option.

Thanks in advance!

DIY all the way. Use an appropriate weight full synthetic of your choice. Keep the receipt for supplies for any potential warranty claims. Pocket the difference.

Many threads on this already.

In a nutshell, for a DD, it doesn't make a lot of difference.

Word to the wise, don't over torque the drain plug or double gasket the filter.

That sounds like the voice of experience. Hard won experience.

Jsolo 01-22-2015 04:13 PM

^^LOL.. Nope, never bitten by these myself but remember the choice words from the instructor when one kid did both to the same car back in HS. That was some decades ago... Best lessons are those learned at someone else's expense. :)

yah, i do check just in case though, when i remove the oil filter to make sure the o-ring is still on the filter and not left on the engine. haha

Best practice is to wipe the oil filter matting surface just in case the person
before you double gasket it.

I did a write up on my first oil change on here somewhere.

So true about over tighting the sump drain plug, after over tightening my BMW once back in the UK I always just hand tight then a quart turn.

The last time I changed my oil in my Z was last week, I actually under tightened the oil filter as there was some oil weeping out of it. No biggie as not much oil was lost. I just use my hands to tighten the oil filter. Makes it so much easier to remove next time around.

Haters gonna hate, I used Mobil 1 0-40 euro spec again this time ;-)

^ I hand tighten my oil filter until it nice and snug then turn it just a tad more. I also torque my drain bolt to 29 foot lbs as stated in the manual.
