TSBs for top issues

3 Attachment(s)
Well, after 2 years my 2010 is now having a couple of top issues. Most worrying is the worn area starting to appear on the passenger side. Based on other threads here I fear this will become a hole in time. I also have a worn area above the drivers window where the top rubs on a packet of wires in the top storage area when it is opened or closed. Finally, I have the problem where the metal panel that covers the top when it is down will hit the bottom side of the top occasionally, usually on cold days.

Looking at the TSB page the only top related issue I saw was for the window hitting the top. Are there any others out there? I have an appointment at the dealer Monday morning and want all the ammo I can get.

That's the only top TSB I'm aware of and I had mine replaced because of the window rubbing the top. I think others in here have had other top issues similar to yours and have had their tops replaced under warranty.

Zrider79 there is a long discussion about these issues here:

I hope I caught mine in time so I don't need my top replaced. I suggest you see your dealer as well. I'll let everyone know how my trip to the dealer goes next week.

Boy, I am still curious as to what percentage of tops are effected. I remember about a year ago some of us here on the forum tried to get some numbers but it didn't seem to work out.

Out of 100% of the Roadsters made, say only 1 or 2% had issues. Then I can see where the TSP may not be applied to the tops as any issues could be considered a fluke.

But I personally have absolutely no idea as to the percentage.

I have a little over 10,000 miles on mine 2010, and have had no problems, but last year the lid did hit the "bar" and made a small dent and chipped some paint on it. I am going to have that addressed in June when I do the State Inspection, as this is the last year of warranty coverage.

I closing, I have to think that most are not having any problems with the top. Seems like it's only hitting a few Roadsters, but then there's that question of; maybe it hasn't happened yet, but when will it?

My personal experience is that once the problem started to show up on the forum, I have never felt immune from top issues.

A dented lid is one thing, that can be fixed easily, but with all the high tech regarding the top, not so easy, and not so inexpensively.

I am curious too. I have about 27000 miles on mine and I open and close the top frequently in all but the hottest and coldest weather. Even with all that it took 2 full years for me to see these problems. Even if people don't have trouble now it may be coming. I really hope I caught mine in time not to need a new top. I am sure that my small dealership has never had to replace a top and I don't want to be their first.

I was the first at my small dealership to have the top replaced. It took a full day and a half. They did an excellent job.

The dealer kept my car overnight and I picked it up this morning. They took pictures and videos of the top opening and closing and are sending those to Nissan to see if I will get a new top or not.

The service rep I was dealing with told me that the worn area on the passenger side was not a problem. He claimed it would just show some creasing there over time. What they are contacting Nissan about is the rubbing area above the drivers window. I hope he is mistaken. Based on what I've read here, the worn area is likely to become a hole over time and to me seemed to be the bigger issue. My warranty doesn't end until January so I have some time for it to get worse and still be covered.

I will post again when we hear from Nissan.

Here's the problem folks. The top material is not covered by any warranty. Its up to the service manager to go to bat for you.

If you see any marks early on, take pictures and get the SM to document this officially that you have noticed a quality problem.

At 3K miles (< 1 year) I noticed two wear spots...one the common pinch points, and another on the inside head liner (rubs against motor as it opens/closes).

SM #1 was all set to replace my top. He left and when SM #2 saw it they said its not a problem (yet). Having an extended warranty may help but only because you spent more, not because its covered.

Don't panic: just be clear, concise and to the point. I think there is a pinch wear problem on the cars, and this is common among other drop tops. I tend to not leave the top down over night etc...to minimize this contact point.

I got a call from the dealer yesterday saying Nissan had contacted them and requested more pics and videos. I took it it today and I'm now waiting again to hear from Nissan. Probably know something next week.

I finally got a response from Nissan today after nearly a month. They had the local dealer photograph and video every Z roadster they had come in after me (there were only 4) and determined that my top ware was about average. The dealer told me that the other cars varied from 1500 to 40k miles (I'm at about 28k). Nissan left it up to the dealer to decide if I would get a new top. I ask if they thought the area above the driver window would get worse and he said he assumed it would. So I am getting a new top.

I am concerned but my warranty ends in January so I would rather have a new top now so I have a few months to take it in if there are fit issues. If I wait till things get worse then have it replaced I wouldn't have any time to test the new top.

On a side note, no rental car for the estimated 3 day replacement. I'm a little pissed about this. It's a warranty issue, I have had rental cars from both Toyota and Mazda in the past for warranty work.

IDZRVIT 06-24-2012 07:08 PM

I guess they're only going to work on it a few hours per day. That sux. Nissan allows 7 or 8 hours for the warranty work. That's what my service mgr told me when I had mine replaced.

axeman71 06-24-2012 07:23 PM

They are sending it to an upholstery shop somewhere in town. I guess they feel they don't have the expertise in the service dept.

Best of luck, axeman. Keep us in the loop on what's going on...

axeman71 07-09-2012 03:29 PM

Well I dropped her off at the dealership today. I'm nervous but we'll see. Said Thursday or Friday I still can't believe no rental for a full weeks warranty repair.
