Upgrading the base roadster audio and need some help with sub location

I am looking into upgrading my base roadster's audio system and have some questions regarding sub location. I have seen member jtgarza3 with this setup and ddanis60 with this setup. Both looks great but what I would like to do is to put two small "sub" (same size as the Bose?) where the Bose puts their in the touring model, like this. I took the pleather apart where the tonneau folds in and saw there are two holes covered by two aluminum panels with screws holding to the body. They look like 6x9, not too sure. I also took the trunk lining out to take a look at the back of the aluminum panel. It doesn't look like there is a lot of room in the back.

My question is whether this is doable. If so, what brand/model I should be researching? Any recommendations? I am not looking for anything bass-y but just want something a little punchy and adds to the music but overpowering it. What do you think? Good idea or total waste of time and money?

Thank you in advance for the help and any suggestion is much appreciated. Thanks.

Additional information. The HU will be replaced. Front speakers will be replaced with Focals. An amp will be added to drive the speakers and woofers.

It is do able, I would get ones about the same size and make sure to either dynomat or use expanding foam to dampen the hallow area inside the areas of the subs. I think it is a great idea!

you maybe able to slip a couple 8" in there...

Does anyone have a picture and size of their Bose woofer, on and/or off the car? This will help me to find the right size/depth. I will take a picture of how it looks like in a base roadster.

I don't know if 8in will fit for not, both the diameter (oval in the car) and depth (maybe a slim profile one?). There is only about 1-2 in max in the back.

Thanks Matt! Have you done any roadster woofer install using the stock Bose location? Do you know what will fit there nicely?

i have yet to see an aftermarket sub that shallow...maybe see if you can come out a bit and use the air space from the stock location?

It maybe possible as long as it clears the tonneau folding down. I think I will take the car to a shop and test fit the speakers.

If possible, can someone take a picture of their Bose sub, front and back? I wonder if the dealer will let me take a look inside...Maybe I should call parts and ask them about the stock woofer size.

I'll talk some pics tonite as I have the covers off on mine. I believe the are like 6x9's. Hell, I'll sell you mine since I am not using anymore, just never removed!

Thanks! This will help a lot. If possible and not asking too much, can you provide the measurements as well?

How do you have your system setup?

Thanks again for the help.

Will try to get measurements. Here is a pic I found in the meantime of the subs. It shows the front and basic shape.

I have a sub in the wheel well, components in the front, one amp and HU.

Thanks! How does the sub/overall low end sound compare to the stock Bose ones since it is enclosed in the trunk? Do you have to turn up the gain? Does your whole trunk rattle?

Much better, IMO. The bose was not bad however... I have considered taking out the old subs to see if it changes the sound any.

I wonder what is that thing covering up the speakers.

Did you mount your amp in the trunk or where the top folds down?

fonZie 10-07-2011 04:35 PM

Where top goes down.

fonZie 10-07-2011 04:38 PM

I think they are to protect the speakers like grills

I saw your amp pic in your album. So it is under the foam? Does it overheat at all?
