Lid Cover contacting Roof

Hello all,

I just want to see if anyone else has a concern I'm experiencing. Everytime I open the top, when the lid starts moving towards an up/open position, it contacts the roof and hits one of the metal supports (obviously on the canvas side). Has anyone else have this issue? It used to be cold weather related, now, even when ambient temps are around mid 70's, this happens.

crash1369 01-19-2011 02:03 PM

I saw it once or twice with mine, but it was when I was installing my stereo so I had the rood partially open (which your not supposed to do) and was messing with things so I hadn't really thought about it. I haven't gotten to open the roof lately but I'll have to pay more attention when it warms up

cujo 01-19-2011 07:32 PM

Most deffinitely! It happens on my driver side. There was a black piece of ruber located on the tip of the lid that will make a loud band against the the ruber trimming under the base of the ragtop. I noticed that I could manually lift the base of the ragtop a little higher to prevent this from happens but it's kind of defeat the purpose of having an automatic convertible roof:)

crash1369 01-19-2011 08:37 PM

Have you mentioned it to the dealer yet?

sarmyth 01-19-2011 09:42 PM

Yeah that happens to me whenever ambient is below 55 or so. Havent bothered to mention it to the dealer as i have yet ot have my top replaced. No biggie though, stick your hand out the window and pull it up ;)

crash1369 01-19-2011 11:32 PM

It doesn't seem like temperature should matter, but it was Very cold when mine did it as well (like 6 :eekdance:)

dude! Dealer is a bunch of useless moron! I will go to the dealer only when it's life and death.

:icon18: Fair enough.

Having to lift my automatic roof out of the way though, on my brand new car, would annoy the crap out of me though so I would bring it in.
Inevitably if I didn't the roof would end up damaged

Of course if/ when I do, I'll probably regret it... and end up with a ****** up roof anyway :rofl2: but at least it will be logged in the computer
(So far my dealership actually seems like they might be competent though, but I haven't really tested that yet theory yet)

sarmyth 01-20-2011 11:02 AM

Temperature definitely matters...the fabric gets stiffer the colder it gets...another reason why I haven't had it modified...afraid the dealer will dial in too much tension for when it's hot. I think there's also a blurb in the manual saying something like don't operate the top below freezing or some such nonsense. You'll be fine. :driving:

cujo 01-20-2011 11:13 AM

I wonder if there's a way that we can fix this ourselves. It shouldn't be that hard to dial it to proper tension right? The only risk is that the dealer might void the warranty.
On the other hand, it might be true that "cold weather" is the major contributor to this. I bought mine in November so it has been cold all along. Perhaps I can wait until the summer before bringing it into the dealer.

crash1369 01-20-2011 11:13 AM

I wasn't paying enough attention to determine what was rubbing, or why. But that makes sense

xinlee 01-20-2011 09:31 PM

Thanks everyone for the input. I'll most likely end up taking this to the dealer for service. My issue was first noticed in cold weather, but when it warmed up, I still noticed this issue. I'll keep y'all posted on the dealer fix. I'll try to take it in some time this month.

sarmyth 01-21-2011 09:39 AM

It is a very simple adjustment... Just like adjusting a throttle cable...I'll see if I can't post the man page tonight

Hi guys! I just sprayed those moving parts with some lubricant and it seemed to clear the top without any problems. Give it a try, it migh help.

Well that sounds scary. A day late but in time for the weekend, here's the info.

mcapuano1101 01-25-2011 10:54 PM

I've had my car for three weeks & the top bangs the lid every time I open it. Took it to the dealer for adjustment...still having the same problem. Maybe it will stop when it warms up. We'll see. I tend to forget about it once the winds blowing in my hair. I love this car. Don't miss the old 350 at all. I'm just going to enjoy the car & keep an eye on the top. I negotiated an extended warranty during my purchase...so if things go south...Nissan will just have to replace it.

mcapuano1101 01-25-2011 11:00 PM

Thanks sarmyth..that looks easy enough. I trust myself before some random tech!

WOWWW! Sarmyth! You SIR are a genious!!!!! I just went out and dailed it....for thefirst time in my life... my lid cleared the roof without any baggings.
That is such an easy and life saving DIY! Thank you soooo muchhhh!!!

mcapuano1101 01-26-2011 09:58 PM

Tried the top adjustment. I seem to have tightened the adjustment bolt as far as it will allow....& still contacting lid. Guess it's back to the dealer...dammit!

Zigen5 01-28-2011 05:14 AM

Mine does that sometimes.... Unless my roof is broken, I refuse to take my car to the dealer... I don't want a small problem turn into a huge problem..

Roadster Fan 01-30-2011 08:27 AM

I have a similar issue. I took it in to the dealer, and they filed a report with the head engineering office <???>. It's been a couple weeks now and I took it back for another issue this week... they said they have not been able to resolve the issue. Curious...

I love my roadster.. for sure.. I am hoping that they resolve these top issues for me... us.

sarmyth 02-21-2013 09:24 PM

Well it's a couple years later and if any of you guys still have your roadsters I'm selling my unused smarttop module, and prepainted brilliant silver fiberglass wing. Never got a chance to install them before moving on.

Eventually got fed up with endless trips to the dealer to fix top wear issues. It was painful to watch my car slowly destroy itself day by day. Any of you guys still in your ZR?

Daveski38 02-22-2013 11:48 AM

sarmyth,

We've still got ours, didn't have this issue with the top so I didn't post in this thread.

What kind of prices are you wanting?

Not sure anyone is still around from this thread. Is this done on both sides or just the driver side?

sarmyth 11-25-2014 10:38 AM

From what i remember i think it was just on one side... But it's been many years :)

tommy_nick 05-01-2015 08:03 PM

So i tried it and still got the led touching ... the thing is i still see a more place to tighten the bolt but it refuses it get so tight that am afraid to break it ... i did relese the lock nut all the way down and it went fine but the adjustment bolt refuses to go all the way down any idea

Jazzster 05-06-2015 01:38 PM

Sigh. Same here. Mine only touches about half the time so whatever. It only scrapes a little when the lid/deck/tonneau cover rises to store the top. When I put the top up I have no issues. So I'll just let it scrape.

vman12 08-31-2019 07:53 AM

see the new thread. nissan engineers have come up with a new bungee to fix the fifth bow issue - lid rubbing the roof. It just came out this August (2019).
